Character Data

"There are powers far greater than any technology."

Profile

The man who was once Mikage Shin was born into wealth and power. He was the youngest son of Mikage Yukiato, a major presence among the Japanese criminal families. While his older brother was groomed to take over his father's place, Shin was trained as an elite assassin and man-hunter. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and intense stealth operations training, Shin rose to the top of his deadly trade. However, political turmoil is a part of criminal life; his brother was assassinated, and Shin was hidden away in San Angeles until things cooled down. Shin was not one to sit idly by and wait to be picked off. He escaped from his protective custody and encountered the fledgling Neo Arcadian movement. Finding the cause intriguing, he joined up and accepted the e-humanization process, becoming a Guardian. Shin has a seemingly upernatural danger sense, and an intuitive understanding of the flow of combat. Since Neo Arcadia fell Umbra Phantom has been persuing an agenda known only to himself and whether his loyalty to Elpizo remains strong still remains to be seen.

Background

For upwards of a century now, the Mikage family has commanded a rich and powerful presence within the Japanese underworld; considered one of the "top league" players of the system, they are inferior to none and equal only to a minority. Granted, their personal assets and interests have always been relatively limited, but their mercenary ventures span such far-reaching fields and their work is of such high quality that few have ever been able to compete adequately with them in that particular area--general espionage, industrial sabotage, political assassinations, malicious hacking; if you want it done, they can do it.

Thirty-two years ago, there was born into this family one Mikage Shin, youngest son of Clan Lord Mikage Yukiato. Immediately, even from birth, Shin was--as all of his family members either were or had been--subjected to precise, psychological manipulations that would groom him mentally for his predetermined role within the family (in his case, that of a spy/assassin); essentially, whether or not he would have naturally developed along those lines, Shin was arbitrarily forced into developing into a cold-hearted and dedicated hunter--there is no room for choice at such young ages, and by the time that choice could be exercised, it would have been thoroughly (if unknowingly to Shin) eliminated.

Time passed for this youth of the shadows, and as his age increased, so did the intensification of his training. Physical, mental, even metaphysical, every base was covered, every angle was touched upon, and at the age of sixteen, Mikage Shin was officially unleashed upon the world. Groomed to be a killer from birth, trained by the best minds of the Art since the age of five, and equipped with technology of which even many members of the UN Special Forces would have be envious, it was not long before this young man came to be considered one of the masters of the trade--surpassing many, many of those who had been practicing it for years, and even decades, longer than he.

Mission blended into mission, year into year, and with the passage of time, Shin's name, capabilities, and distinguishment extended far beyond Japan, spreading throughout many of the major underworlds of the entire globe. The youngest Mikage's skills placed him in considerably high demand, and with each consecutive success, the amount which he could reasonably charge for his services increased, until, at the age of twenty-six, he was ranked as one of the top-ten most expensive hit-men of any syndicate of any country. Needless to say, when not putting his life on the line for his clients, Shin lived a very wealthy and expansive life.

As they say, however, all good things come to an end (although whether Shin's life could actually be termed "good" is certainly questionable), and shortly after our (anti)hero reached the age of twenty-nine, his older brother--who, as an interesting sidenote, was second-in-command of the Mikage family, his skills constantly being refined for eventually taking full control--was assassinated. Unfortunately, whoever committed the deed was extremely skilled in what they did, and only enough information could be found to indicate that Shin was next on the unknown attacker's list (but not enough to adequately counter such an intent). Thus, in an effort to ensure that another of his sons and chief men were not killed, Yukiato had his youngest progeny hidden away, deep in the heart of San Angeles, until such a time as the perpetrator (and his patron/s) could be revealed and "dealt with."

However, Shin detested the notion of merely "hiding out," and in his opinion, it was more likely for him to be found if he were to remain in one general location, than if he were to constantly move about, always covering his tracks. Whether he was correct in that assessment or not, however, remains to be seen, for after only a month of such living, he encountered the fledgling Neo Arcadia movement. Seeing an opportunity to gain himself some viable protection while still avoiding obscurity, he immediately joined on under the guise of "being intrigued by the cause," and--his innate capabilities further enhanced and exponified by the E-Human process--after only two weeks of service, he was named as one of Elpizo's four Guardians.

The rest is, as the old saying goes, history.

Personality

(Note: this is merely a rough preliminary, and is subject to change as I further flesh out Shin's character).

There are two very distinctive faces to the entity known as Umbra Phantom. When engaged in his professional duties, he is completely unreadable, serious to a fault, practically exuding of death and danger, and seemingly not possessing of the slightest scrap of compassion or humanity. To his allies--on the rare occassions that he is forced to work others--he is generally impassive (although in the case of his fellow Guardians, he will display it in a more positive manner than normal), but if one thinks that they will attempt to "lighten the mood" or engage him in petty banter or small talk (or generally just otherwise show themselves to be fools and incompetents), they will receive anything from a choleric glare to a hostile death-threat. His enemies, however, generally never discover what attitude he might display towards them, for they almost universally die before they even know of his presence. (In the event that Phantom is forced to engage in direct combat, he is unnervingly detached and cold-hearted).

Conversely, however, those who find him outside of the mission field find a drastically different person, one whom they would never guess as being one of the world's most prominent spies and assassins if they did not personally know that part of his nature. Indeed, in those increasingly-rare times when he is not serving "on-duty," so to speak, Phantom is fairly amiable, laid-back, more than capable of holding a solid, social conversation, and can even become very passionately animated when discussing a topic of great interest (which usually involves politics or philosophy). Granted, he's no epitome of charisma, and it's just as often that he desires solitude in his spare time as the friendly company of another (and those who display stupidity or immaturity around him are likely to receive the cold shoulder), but he's certainly not the person you would expect if you only knew of his background or had only met him on the field; all-in-all, he's a very full, three-dimensional person.

Plans and Goals

Early in life (late teenage years and early adulthood--once he had passed the stage of unquestioningly accepting that which his authority told him), Shin was content to merely continue with the life which he had been raised to live, to continue honing his skills and procuring more power. This was not because his father wished him to do so, but because he honestly took a solid, introspective look at his life and decided that there was no particular reason to alter his current course, that he genuinely reveled in the personal power which he held. Potentially, this all may have remained constant in his life, except for, of course, his encounter with Neo Arcadia. At first, he merely used the faction as a means for his own protection and furtherance of power, but as time progressed, he genuinely became convinced of their goals and ambitions (thus, they became his own goals and ambitions). Currently, with all of the upheaval surrounding that which he devoted himself to for two years, he is once again taking a very serious, introspective look at his life, and if he has yet devised any concrete plans and goals, no one knows of it--his true motivations and loyalties remain hidden to all.

Random Information

  • After joining Neo Arcadia, Shin was disowned by his father for "betraying" the family.
  • Almost all of his assets were absorbed into the Mikage family at large when he was disowned.
  • Shin is constantly on the lookout for Hologram technology that would be compatible with his Umbra Phantom armor, as well as a process by which he could utilize Blink.
