Profile
Sandra 'Songbird' Lee, a data organization specialist with SciTech, is one among many bright young stars in the organization. Originally a database administrator for a large investment firm in San Angeles, Songbird was lucky to escape with her life after the Force Metal Bomb demolished her place of business; she signed on with SciTech shortly after in order to "do some good in this world." The radiation from the blast still caused irreperable damage to her right arm and several internal organs, all of which were replaced with cybernetic prosthetics. She's got a particularly large chip on her shoulder for the Robot Masters as a result, although her duties with SciTech come first - her obsessively organized nature will not allow her to act otherwise. She's known both on and offline by her childhood nickname, and usually even her closest acquaintances aren't even aware of her real first name. Songbird is definitely not suited for real-world combat, though she can attempt to fend off attacks with her fencing expertise from her college days; she is, however, extremely capable with a keyboard, and is attempting to determine if her cybernetic implants are sophisticated enough to enable direct access to the 'net.
Background
Sandra Lee was born on March 12th, 2190, the same year the 'golden age of science' began. She grew up in a middle-upper-class suburban home in New Hampshire, and attended public school for the first part of her life. She did well in most of her subjects, due to a very strict work ethic instilled in her by her parents (the lone exception being history classes, where she struggled a bit), but excelled most in science classes of any kind - physics, biology, and especially computer science. While she wasn't too skilled with the hardware aspect of it - she knew just enough to get by - she was a whiz at software development. Sometime around age 10 she briefly signed up with the school choir and orchestra; ironically, she can't sing a note, so her father found great amusement in calling her 'Songbird.' The name stuck, to the point where even her own parents use it to this day (her maternal grandmother continued to call her Sandra until she died, however).
This trend continued all through her teenage years, with Songbird freely exploring the internet via public terminals (until her parents could buy one of the ubiquitous devices for her one Christmas). She even cracked the security (and remained uncaught) on a few highly-public websites and servers, yet never touched a thing. She mostly just wanted to see how things work. When it came time for Songbird to go to college, there was little to no question about what she'd take - or where she'd go. Like many famous science-y types, Songbird attended the University of San Angeles, enrolling as a freshman in 2208 and emerging in 2212 with a bachelor's degree in computer science - somehow managing to finish despite the Robot Masters and Mavericks wreaking havoc in the world on a near-regular basis, not to mention the Stardroid menace. While there she joined the fencing club, becoming their president after less than a year and earning multiple awards at the regional and state level, as well as a runner-up at a national fencing competition.
However, just a degree doesn't cut it and a world-wide war is no reason to stop life as usual completely; so, in order to pay the bills, Songbird moved north to take a paid internship as a cubicle monkey with Applesoft. For the next 2 years, she worked as a developer in the multimedia and network software divisions, eventually working up to the vaunted position of Software Developer III, with her own small division of lackeys. To fill in gaps between projects, Songbird developed her avatar program, which gradually became her internet persona. However, the job itself bored her silly, and in late 2214 she joined ING-State Financial (the merger of ING Securities and State Street) at their office in San Angeles as lead application developer and unofficial security implementation expert.
Songbird had been working at ISF for just under 5 years when Gemini Man detonated his bomb on January 1st, 2219; despite multiple attacks on San Angeles, this one she couldn't avoid completely. ISF's branch office was completely demolished, and all former workers who'd managed to live were sent emails to inform them ISF had no intention of re-opening until order was re-established there, which currently seems like 'never.' However, Songbird was not totally unaffected: she was stuck in traffic on a bridge leading into San Angeles that day, and thus the majority of the blast missed her. The radiation, however, did not; Songbird suffered gradual organ failure on multiple organs on the right side of her body, as well as her right arm. The effects weren't discovered until she'd flown back to New Hampshire to visit her parents; rushing her to a hospital, they paid for replacements to be made for each organ as well as a prosthetic arm. (She immediately paid them back upon waking, though her insurance reimbursed a good deal of it.) It took some getting used to, but Songbird recuperated to the point where she barely notices the difference between the two arms unless she looks at it; it's obviously mechanized in appearance, but she doesn't pay attention.
Jobless and homeless, Songbird tried to figure out where she could put her skills to use; meanwhile, SciTech was growing to some prominence after recruiting Sarah Fairchild, as well as signing their defense cooperation deal with S.T.A.R.S. (Not to mention that she already knew the name, having used their antivirus software at ISF.) It didn't take much to see that SciTech was putting forth an effort to do some good in the world, so she applied for a position as a data security developer, which was eventually accepted, bringing Songbird up to the present day.
Trivia/Facts
- Songbird's birthdate is March 12, 2190.
- She is technically a cyborg, due to the loss of her right arm and most of the organs on her right side. Only the arm is obvious, but it's really obvious.
- There have been a couple questions about Songbird's primary. It is a strike with her fencing foil; it's blunt because competition-style foils - the type she's used to using - are blunt-tipped.
Other
Songbird Lee is my 7th character with hacking, but one of the only ones I've personally designed. Garuda.EXE draws its appearance very liberally from its namesake; she looks a lot like a gold, white, and red combat Reploid, but with a wingspan two-and-a-half times her height.
