Text.
It all started Wednesday night, when Harold Magrevich was killed. No one knew by who, it was someone dressed as me, which means either someone has cloned my design or it's a hologram user; but tonight I can now say that one of two groups ordered the death. It was either the group that was spawned by Black Shield, the so-called 'new school'; or the larger behind-the-scenes group, Nebula Syndicate, 'the so-called 'old school'. This information comes from the robot I met who was shooting the clone of myself. Someone for lack of an actual name I'm calling Wasp, the clone or same-model line as Dynamo and Spider who tried to take down Harold's Assassin.
Harold's murder has set off a chain of events. A chain of events that we /have/ to stop. In the last few weeks I've been investigating Harold, Teresa, their friends and family, and their ties to various organizations. I can now say with a fair amount of certainty that Harold belonged to one of the above groups, the 'new school'. It was here in my various discussions with contacts that I found a photo.
(It's a picture of Teresa's savate club at the International School of Geneva. Teresa is standing in a crowd of students, with their parents with them along with several donors to the club; business leaders and the like. Harold is standing to her left, his hand on her shoulder. On her right is one of Harold's powerful UN contacts -- James Houseman IV, with his hand on her other shoulder. Teresa seems genuinely happy in this picture, about a year removed from her mother's death.)
The photo was taken shortly after her mother was killed. In the two years after her mother was killed, while at ISG... no where does Teresa smile like that in any other photo. Everywhere else she's total ice.
Harold couldn't be saved. Despite Cinnamon's best efforts, she could only keep him alive to pass on messages to his family and to utter a word that I had heard Wasp mention earlier at the art gallery where Herald was shot. Harold's last words... "Old friend, I...have missed you. It goes...as we expected. Young turks... Strong, proud. Smarter than...we ever were. Zeitgeist of the eschaton. Beautiful." 'The young turks' and the 'zeitgeist of eschaton'... both had more meaning than I realized till I looked them up this morning. Young turks refers to any young progressive or insurgent member of an institution, movement, or political party. Eschaton refers to eschatology... the end of the world. Harold believes this new group that has stepped outside of the shadow of the older members of whatever/whoever controls Black Shield or whatever it's called now... is starting to grow and surpass them in strength. Wasp confirmed that with Harold's death a war has started between the two. A war that will very likely spread out beyond just those groups to the world at large. Wasp stated that when Black Shield was destroyed we didn't get them all, and that an equilibrium had existed between the two groups /until/ someone ordered Harold's death.
I had a gut feeling last night, before Wasp told me all this after grabbing Teresa, that Gaus, Teresa, and likely her boyfriend Brandon were the next targets if the groups began to collapse and fight. It was a gut reaction, one I stand by... Gaus was safe, the other two were not. Rock and I have had them under surveillance for awhile. I knew what the security around her home was, it wasn't enough. I made the move to take her into the Labs, whether she wanted it or not, because she was not safe. They had killed her grandfather publically. We all know what Black Shield and whoever was behind it was capable of. Once at the Lab she could have been transferred to Gaus's custody, since he had the power of the ADF behind him.
When Sonata told me she was crouched down with a knife in her hand, I knew two things. That she was past the point of fear and was in utter terror. A terror that while very well earned, was beyond the point of reasoning. So I made the call to pull her in forcefully. If she had went to ground out in Rio, we would never have found her till it was too late. Pulling her in, despite the storm that it caused, got her to a level of safety where she and Gaus have at least a fighting chance of whoever comes after them. My gut told me leaving her alone would have seen her dead within a few days.
The pile of gathered intelligence I managed to get over the last few weeks has been forwarded to Rock. I leave it to him to forward it to those that should have it. All the conversations I had people associated with Harold and Teresa tell me that Harold was the one most involved in whichever group he was a member of; but also that Harold wanted Teresa involved as well. Whether she was or not already, it's easy to see that she knew some things about what her grandfather was involved in, if she wasn't already a member herself.
I'm still not convinced that this Wasp character was trying to help save Harold. He seemed to have a fairly good familiarity with whoever was using my image to kill Harold. But at the same time he also appeared after I grabbed Teresa and gave me the above information about the schism between the two groups that built upon the independant data we've gathered and Harold's last words. So for the moment I told Wasp that if he ran into trouble, he can call me and I'll see what we can do.
I'll be honest, I'm really f***ing worried about the storm that's been created because of Harold's death. Mostly because we /don't/ know the faces of our enemies.
We need to find out.
And we need to do it fast.
