The Introduction

Promise Island became Government Land during the third World War, with signposts along its edge warning potential trappers to come no closer than the shore. Trappers have long since learned that the island was depopulated of native wildlife larger than birds when the government took over, and have come to regard the foreboding mile-long strip of wooded, apparently abandoned land as sterile. The older natives believe it is cursed.

Promise Island sits by itself in the Hudson Bay, with shipping routes that come no closer than three miles around a security zone around it. There has been no recorded incidents of this zone ever being violated, or sanctions levied on anyone for violating that zone. Traffic this far out is so rare that it's just the politeness of the natives that have kept the island untouched for as far back as the oldest Inuit in the area can remember. It never occurred to them to visit the island, even after the collapse of the United Nations. After all, if it was off-limits, it was probably for a good reason. Right?

Investigation of the island with Google Earth showed a smudgy brownish mass shaped generally like an almond that didn't get any clearer in resolution past 7500 feet. It doesn't have the traditional "government land" flags on it that normally limits Google Earth, but instead appears to all observers as another uninhabited island in northern Canada. Aside from the usual complaints about poor resolution by mapophiles, no one has raised much of a fuss about it.

IMPERATOR's version of the island shows a pentagon-shaped structure about 75 meters in diameter near its center beneath one of the shallow lakes that dot the island. The construction appears to be at least two stories tall, with the possibility of greater depth below the lake bed itself. The structure is invisible to flyover inspections because of visual baffling and the natural concealing quality of the water, though it is only about 5 meters below the surface of the lake.

The Investigation

It started as a simple salvaging expedition for equipment at an abandoned Black SHIELD facility.

It turned into something with far more sinister implications.

Arrival

Arriving on board Charlie Archer's Red Thunder, Gospel personnel along with several associated Hunters, secured the immediate area and began a search for the entrance to the base. Alpha discovered an underwater entrance while Roll and Zero found one in the ground beyond the lake's edge. Red, Alloy, Nana, Chroma Bee and Alia along with Charlie's own men caught up soon afterwards.

Alpha's entrance led to an airlock.

Roll's entrance led to an underground, semi-frozen hallway ending at a one-way door sealed from the inside.

Exploration

The base was determined to be organized into six levels, two 'upper' levels and four sub basements, in spite of the fact that the two upper levels were under water, above the lakebed. The higher of the two floors was home to administrative offices, including offices for high ranking personnel when visiting, the lower general staff offices and cubicles.

The first sub-basement held a barricks.

The second sub-basement held a holographic training facility, as well as the primary computers for the base.

The third sub-basement was the home to a medical wing, including equipment suspected to be used for genetic augmentation processes.

The fourth and final sub-basement housed the living facilities for the six principal occupants of the base for its last known use, the children of Project Aesir.

Discovery

It was determined, during the initial on-site survey, that the Promise Island facility was the home of Project Aesir, a genetic engineering and training program started by Grandmaster Meio and The Professor.

See Secure:Aesir for more information.

The facility itself showed signs of having been abandoned shortly after a vote had come about to determine whether or not the project would be continued or discarded. Harold Magrevich and Octavius Simonescu initially argued to discontinue the project, force the children through puberty and make use of them as they were. The Professor remained largely neutral. James Houseman IV and Meio persuaded their two colleagues to continue the project, partially for the sake of the children, but also in the hopes that Project Aesir would continue to advance the Solo clone solider program.

The base was abandoned at a date roughly matching up with Vile's assault on Seoul to liberate Sigma and the original Maverick Squad, marking the beginning of the age of the Maverick Virus. The whereabouts of the Aesir following this base's closure is presently not known.

The Aftermath

Airstar and his men got the medical equipment.

Gospel got the sweet, sweet information in the base's servers.

Everybody was a little bit disturbed, but wealthier for the experience.
