Character Data

"When chaos comes knocking at this world's door, we must be there to provide order."

Profile

Gaus Magrevich became the CEO of his father's company, Magrevich Industries, after Harold Magrevich's assassination by an unknown party. Formerly a MacArthur-like figure in the Australian Defense Forces (ADF), Gaus continues to resist becoming the man his father was. made his name in China during the end days of the Chinese Revolution, being promoted to General by the age of 33. After the UN charter was signed, Gaus maintained his position in the new UN global army. He married and had a single child, Teresa. He was in Sydney during the CRF's first attack, which claimed the life of his wife. After the attack, Gaus began to push for a more forceful response to the Maverick threat based in human strength rather than "manufactured slaves". He has openly disliked the direction the UN took for years before the Houseman affair, and protested against the nation rejoining the reformed UN afterward. Gaus remains politically active and is a mover and shaker in the back rooms of the world's power brokers. Athletic and competitive, Gaus continues to play intermural rugby and regularly trounces men half his age.

Background

Red's Investigation - Dec 4, 2219

Red hits the street. He's familiar to the military establishment, so he can get some of the ADF guys to talk. He has better luck with UN military people, and probably has the best chance with some of the Americans Gaus has worked with. He can also learn some things based on interviews in old newspapers and magazines, as Gaus has been interviewed before during his lengthy career.

Gaus Magrevich has had a distinguished career of professional service. He's made many powerful friends on his way up through the ADF. He's been a General for almost twice as long as Blues has been alive. Many people know him and are willing to talk to Red or some proxy version of Red about him. His opponents will be especially willing to dish some dirt, particularly about his personal life. As Gaus will be officially retired on January 1st, their lips are a little looser.

It becomes immediately obvious that Gaus is a Canberra insider, and even has connections in Washington because of his lengthy service in the UN military. Gaus doesn't have many friends in Labor, but Cooper and his people liked Gaus a lot. Cooper and Gaus apparently went to school together, though didn't get to know each other until they entered the civil service. As a general rule, Gaus' International School ties have served him well. Gaus gives money regularly to the alumni society and speaks at student functions whenever he is invited. The School is probably the one thing his father and Gaus always had in common.

Gaus knows how to play the system. While not a social butterfly, Gaus knows what hands to shake and whose backs to slap to get things done. This is a necessity when you're a high-ranking military official, and critical to success at the top of the ADF establishment. He's gotten away at getting into a yelling match with the President of the United States because he knew that he had the absolute support of his subordinates to the point where he was politically untouchable at home. (Being close to retirement helped.)

People remark that Gaus is a strong-willed (his opponents say "stubborn") man who has clear opinions about the issues of the day. Having served in the brutal Chinese campaign, he has developed a tendency to speak clearly and bluntly even when it is unpopular. Many people compare his style to MacArthur -- if MacArthur had figured out not to get into public fights with Eisenhower. Gaus speaks out, but he doesn't speak to the press when he disagrees with the government. Repliforce knows that Gaus wasn't behind expelling all the Reploids from Australia, but he never went on record against it until he threw the rule out himself. He knew where his power came from.

Gaus has the respect of his subordinates and superiors alike. While Gaus is a hard man to like, he's an easy man to follow. He has a direct and unambiguous leadership style, and demands nothing of his people that he doesn't demand from himself. Gaus will get his hands dirty when he needs to, and in combat leads from the front. He personally went up against Wily in a ride armor and was badly wounded by the resulting Robot Master retaliation, but Gaus didn't abandon his men -- and he never surrendered. Even with the contentious period after Cooper's death, Gaus is still considered a national hero by native Australians. Even the European refugees grudgingly respect his heroism and personal leadership during a difficult period in Australia's history. History will be kind to Gaus Magrevich.

Gaus has a powerful competitive spirit. He's been taking part in national triathlons for almost his entire adult life, and places in the upper 40 percent consistently. Gaus loves the outdoors and is usually found surfing in the Australian summer and hiking in the colder months to stay in conditioning. To this end, Gaus lives a spartan existance to prevent himself from getting soft. Though he makes a comfortable living, and has recently come into abundant wealth from the death of his father, Gaus invests his money and very rarely spends money on anything but essentials. His colleagues note that he is a voracious reader and reads the major newspapers of record every day.

Gaus' professional life is put into contrast by his tragic personal life. His associates talk about the warm relationship he had with his wife, and how he seemed to enjoy the simple family life he had. People relate the pride he had in Teresa and her progress through the world, though Gaus would often be separated from his family for long periods because of his various duties around the world.

All of that changed when the Mavericks hit Sydney on November 13, 2206. The UN military was seemingly powerless against the Maverick threat. Gaus was on the front lines and saw many of his friends and colleagues killed or horrifically maimed. His wife was killed in front of his daughter by the Mavericks. His city was in ruins. It was too much for him to bear, and he did what he was trained to do; he put his nation first. He thought he was being strong for Teresa, but in reality his emotional coldness and stoicism left her adrift. She found comfort with her grandparents, who seemed to give her renewed purpose; he vowed to himself that he would never allow Australia to fall beneath the teeth of its enemies without a fight.

For more than a decade, Gaus and Teresa were estranged. Teresa sided with her grandfather, serving as his right hand, and Gaus found comfort and order in the military. Teresa spent almost all of her time with her grandparents while she was away at school, and her visits became less and less common. Gaus managed to set up Teresa with a soldier on a blind date in 2213, a Charles Archer, but after a year it ended explosively; Charlie was apparently cheating on her with multiple women and was using ADF paperwork to cover it up. He was drummed out of the service, and rumor has it that Gaus apparently beat him up at some point. If this is true, it was covered up well by the ADF, as there's no paperwork on the matter to find. Teresa was a very rare presence in Gaus' life after that.

Over the last year, Teresa has apparently renewed her ties with Gaus, perhaps related to her new boyfriend's influence. Harold apparently did not care much for Brandon, while Gaus apparently thinks he's acceptable enough despite having an unfortunate last name. As Brandon appears to be the opposite of Teresa's last long-term boyfriend, it's obvious that Gaus wants his little girl to have a stable man in her life rather than a hero.

When you take all of this in a broader context, you can conclude that Gaus defines himself by what he does; a soldier, a triathlete, a leader of men. His personal life is empty, and he fills that space with work. This is probably where Teresa learned that particular destructive behavior pattern. Unlike Teresa, Gaus hasn't dated or even looked at another woman since Margaret died, though he doesn't wear his wedding ring any more.

Gaus isn't driven by money or power, even though this has come to him naturally because of his work ethic and commitment to excellence. Gaus instead lives for honor. He believes in freedom and democracy, and is fiercely patriotic. At the same time, he knows the system and uses the connections he's cultivated intelligently so to be able to maximize the amount of good he can do. His idealism is tempered with a sense of realpolitik.

It is unclear whether or not Gaus would accept the role of CEO of Magrevich Industries yet. He is clearly qualified to take a leadership position, and is not unfamiliar with the business. With his retirement from the ADF becoming effective on January 1st, he will have an abundance of free time and a good forty years of life ahead of him to consume. One suspects that he would like something to do with himself. On the other hand, he might become a professional surfer. Nobody has the inside track on this situation yet.
