Jazz and Sonata - Nov 30, 2219
Jazz and Sonata are grateful to be given what looks to be a relatively straightforward assignment. They start spending some time in Switzerland looking into Ecolint. Some basic information comes your way almost immediately, based on pamphlets and other publically available information. You learn about the founders, the general history of the school, and the campus life. It seems like a nice place to go to school.
The sprawling campuses of the International School of Geneva is difficult to completely canvas. Most of the campuses are in Switzerland and cover grade ranges from K through bachelor's degrees. About 25,000 students attend the various schools. These are the children of the wealthy and privileged, and no expense is spared in keeping them safe. Switzerland already is a nation-fortress, and Ecolint has additional private security on top of that keeping things secure.
Sonata can get some of the basic floor plans from public records in Switzerland. Specific things are not given to the public, though are available to the record-keepers. She believes that hacking them would be extraordinarily dangerous; the risk/reward ratio there is very unfavorable. However, you can get a general idea about how the buildings are laid out, and Hunter sensors start comparing the site against the publically available plans for irregularities.
Jazz observes that security is tight. Aside from the usual Switzerland security of constant military maneuvers and intense surveilliance of public areas, Ecolint's campus is wired with a separate sensor grid designed to maximize the safety of its faculty and staff. Ground patrols take place with both uniformed and plainclothes security officers, and the response time of the security staff to a given incident anywhere on campus is less than 5 minutes.
Sonata gets the feeling that the Swiss are onto them. There are no obvious signs of this. They are free to move through the country and the police are not hassling them. Their questions are answered politely and as quickly as anyone else's. But there is a sense of unease, like anticipation, that lingers around them.
Nothing has immediately sprung to their attention. The business affairs of the school are a matter of public record and have government-appointed oversight boards. There's no lack of the usual dirty laundry; personnel disputes, complaints about the board of trustees, battles between divisions, interpersonal rivalries, the occasional sex scandal. Newspaper coverage of the school goes back generations and faithfully records what comes to public light. It seems like any other large institution. However, Jazz and Sonata have pledged to keep trying to find out more about the school, and would like some additional money for new ski equipment.
Jazz and Sonata's Investigation - Dec 8, 2219
Jazz and Sonata have been making steady reports about Ecolint for the last week. They have settled comfortably into their various cover identities; in Jazz' case, working in the fundraising department, while Sonata does clerical work for the primary school division. When they aren't maintaining their various jobs, they keep looking into different leads.
Sonata has made hand-drawn maps of many buildings on campus by walking through them during the course of making deliveries or hunting down different departments. These maps are fairly accurate and are suitably annotated in helpful ways with locations of surveilliance blind spots, coordinate points for Blues to Blink into, what offices are inhabited and which are empty, and so on.
A few trips to the library has earned some more background on the history of the various named buildings. The Ashford Building was actually funded by Alexander Ashford, son of Edward, in the early 2200s. Construction began in spring 2203 and finished in fall 2204. The purpose of the building isn't for biotech research, but is actually designed as classroom space. Further, a high-energy plasma experiment laboratory is in the basement that is generally only accessible to students during designated hours, as it can be very dangerous.
The Magrevich Center was funded by Harold Magrevich. Construction started in 2193 and finished in 2195 due to an architectural dispute. A large computer lab is in the basement of the center, with mechanical engineering laboratories on the main floor. Offices are on the higher floors, as well as some limited classroom space. Harold Magrevich was apparently an active booster and has been sponsoring several engineering teams over the years in competitions.
Jazz has been looking into the webs of connection that seem to crisscross across Ecolint. Apparently networking is one of the big selling pitches she gives in voice mails and teleconferences to donors. The script she was trained on talks a lot about how numerous world leaders and corporate magnates have come from the school, and the benefits of the alumni association in terms of finding employment. She goes through the spiel of how many powerful people have gone to Ecolint and moved on to become dominant in their fields of interest; Presidents, generals, scientists, journalists, CEOs... It really feels like the school itself is just a breeding ground for power.
Sonata has commented that the school itself looks to be relatively normal. Aside from the usual problems any large school has in terms of personnel disputes and minor scandals, there isn't any real corruption here she can find. Money is not being laundered. Mind control weapons are not being used. Nobody is even all that indoctrinated, though the school has a definite internationalist slant that is understandable, considering the UN's patronage for centuries. It really seems to be the case that powerful interests, through funding and diligent support of the alumni system, have decided to use this place to groom their successors and make sure that they make critical connections.
You could call it a conspiracy, Sonata concludes, but not a very threatening one. At least, not based on what she knows.
Jazz and Sonata make their Thursday check-in. They do not make their Friday check-in, or any thereafter.
