Alexius Octavius Simionescu is the last son of a crumbling line of Romanian nobility. His family had lost most of its wealth and power during the beginning of the 20th century, but had reclaimed its ancestral home during the Soviet expansion of the Third World War in exchange for aid. After the war ended, the line supported itself by investing in anti-gravity technology, which returned it to prestige and strength. Alexius was poised to inherit an impressive fortune and considerable political power. He was groomed for power, going to the best schools and forming critical relationships with future power-players. However, Alexius had little interest in becoming a shadow master, and instead attempted to become a rock star. His father Octavius, one of Houseman's conspirators, gave up on him and focused on creating the ideal world for his son on his own. When the conspiracy fell, Octavius was killed in the resulting purges, and Alexius was left the disgraced, heavily sued executor of a collapsing estate. Angry at how the world had apparently betrayed him, Alexius struggled to rebuild his former power, taking the only help he could get -- help from the rebuilding conspiracy. Alexius has a relatively low level of skill in world domination, and so relies what assets were left to him from his father and on his minions to help him rise up to power inside Nebula. He will have his revenge! And then he will return to rocking out.

Background

It isn't clear when Alexius Octavius Simionescu was born. Alexius is believed to be in his late 50s or early 60s. You can't say for sure because most of the birth records of Europe were lost or damaged during the occupation; the United Nations relied on regional archives because of restrictive privacy laws.

His father, Octavius Aloysius Simionescu, was the count of a small region in Transylvania, Romania and had taken several women over the years. One of these women, Gisela Fleischer, is probably Alexius' mother. Gisela died shortly after Octavius was born, apparently caused by depression. This precipitated a lengthy rocky relationship between Octavius and Alexius, with a lot of resentment and anger between the two men.

Octavius had made his fortune investing in anti-gravity and teleportation technology. He expected his son to follow in his footsteps, but Alexius wanted to be a musician. Octavius put Alexius through an elite education despite his requests. Alexius went to the International School of Geneva through high school, and then found his way into one of the grandes écoles in Paris: the ESSEC business school. Alexius miserably found his way into the family business and plugged along for many years. He regularly got into severe accidents to get out of work, eventually leading to Octavius making him into a full-conversion cyborg to make him unable to call off sick.

At some point in his 30s, Alexius was married to Annette of Bernadotte, one of the last surviving nobles of Sweden with a direct chance of becoming queen. It lasted for a few years before, in a messy and very public display, Annette divorced Alexius and extracted a nasty settlement from the Simionescus. Octavius was furious and apparently condemned Alexius to life inside the ancestral castle for years for his failure.

Alexius disappeared from public life until Octavius died. Octavius had direct ties to Black SHIELD and died fighting during the weeks after the coup. His body was found by UN agents. After his death, Alexius was ruthlessly investigated but ultimately determined to be "too inept" to be a conspirator. The remaining family assets were turned over to him, which he generally liquidated except for the castle. Alexius has been living in the castle with his mercenary army of "security men" ever since, and was apparently able to repeatedly repel Maverick attacks.

You base this on accounts you can find in the society columns of old Romanian newspapers -- but again, there's no way to be sure outside of asking the man yourself. Gisela died shortly after Alexius was born, attributed to depression. Her death was the cause of the rocky relationship between Octavius and Alexius.

ESSEC operates out of a virtual campus administrated from Eurasia. After some hemming and hawing, you manage to track down one of Alexius' teachers, an ancient man named Johannes Greenwald. Greenwald confirms that Alexius, while bright, was unmotivated. "He wanted to play music, but his father made him go through business school. He did the bare minimum to get by ... we kept him around because his father kept raising more money for the school."

After he finished his university education, Alexius miserably found his way into the family business and plugged along for many years. His father's company, then called Omnitech, made large generator systems used in massive industrial projects. The environment gave Alexius many opportunities to act out on himself. He regularly got into severe accidents to get out of work, occasionally mauling himself so horribly that he would lose fingers or limbs. This self-destructive streak eventually lead to Octavius having Alexius made into a full-conversion cyborg to prevent him from being able to call in sick.

A former Omnitech executive, Ariel Sundar, works for a non-profit group affiliated with Light Labs. She says that it was hard to tell if Alexius suffered from cyberpsychosis because he was always profoundly mad. "Both of them," meaning Alexius and his father, "were madmen. At least Alexius was a /pleasant/ madman, which made him less dreary than Octavius."

At some point in his 30s, Alexius was married off to Annette of Bernadotte, one of the last surviving nobles of Sweden with a direct chance of becoming queen. This was apparently orchestrated by Octavius and Annette's parents as a business venture to consolidate their wealth. It lasted for a few years before, in a messy and very public display, Annette divorced Alexius and extracted a nasty settlement from the Simionescus. This was well documented in the society pages at the time and even appeared in Swedish tabloids. Octavius was furious and apparently condemned Alexius to life inside the ancestral castle for his failure. Annette won't talk to you about Alexius, as it is apparently a touchy topic.

Under his father's house arrest, Alexius completely disappeared from public life until Octavius died. Octavius apparently had direct ties to Black SHIELD and died fighting during the weeks after the coup, assumedly being pursued by government agents. His body was recovered by UN agents and buried somewhere in Romania after the autopsy; you can't find out where, but the UN people you talk to assure you that he died. They won't tell you what he was up to all the same. "An enemy of the state," they say, and that's as far as they go.

After Octavius' death, Alexius was ruthlessly investigated but ultimately determined to be "too inept" to be a conspirator. The remaining family assets were turned over to Alexius, which he liquidated except for the castle. Omnitech was sold off, piece by piece, and Alexius' liquid capital was reinvested in a series of long-term investments.

Alexius has been living in the castle with his mercenary army of "security men" ever since. The forces in the castle were apparently able to repeatedly repel Maverick attacks during the occupation, and continue to be the law of the Transylvania area. The castle's floor plans are not registered anywhere in Romania. The best record you can find is an ancient rendering of the early construction of the castle at some point in the 11th century which is probably not very accurate any more. The Juggalos who farm the outlying areas don't take kindly to people messing around with the dirt, either.

Myspace

Fortunately, Count Elek's Myspace is not of the blinding variety...probably because he hasn't figured out how to use other templates. It's set up as "default", so it fits comfortably on most screens. On the main page, his picture is on the left hand side; he's wearing a suit and standing on a dirty stage in some Romanian nightclub, wearing his usual suit and jamming on an electric guitar. He's a male, 99 years old (Myspace convention to avoid being picked up by dating robots), from Transylvania ROMANIA. He logs in every day.

Elek has a number of friends, some of them hot women. His top eight include an English girl named "Maddy" with wild pink pigtails (the classic "holding the camera and aimed at oneself picture"), and a girl from Michigan named "Chloe" who has a heart drawn on her face and is apparently a Juggalo (her picture is at some kind of mass function, taken by someone else). The other six friends are an indie record store in central Romania, the Order and Chaos fan page, and four other European metal bands you've never heard of.

Elek's interests include: death metal, Order and Chaos, and some awful European mass-appeal comedy series. His heroes include a variety of musicians you've never heard of. He's in a few Myspace groups for amateur musicians.

His details show that he's Single/Not Looking, here for Networking, Straight, with a hometown of Transylvania, Fullcon body type (added by popular demand), and a Taurus. He doesn't smoke but he does drink, and has a college education. He went to some elite private school called the International School of Geneva through high school, and then to one of the grandes écoles in Paris: the ESSEC business school. Yet he wants to play the electric guitar. Telling.

Elek has a stream of comments on his page, along with numerous links to videos and audio clips. He plays the guitar loud and hard, and so do most of his friends.
