Black SHIELD: Weapons

Black SHIELD has a series of listed weapons caches around the world. Most are said to contain conventional weapons, fuel, ammunition, that sort of thing. Several are deep below the ocean surface, at least one of them is supposedly somewhere in the Arctic, and there are a few in the middle of Australia.

Other, smaller installations store biological, chemical and nuclear weapons: though these weapons are primarily being turned to use against Reploids rather than humans. A bunker in northern Minnesota is said to contain live samples of the White Rust and Cancers, which are assumedly being worked on to make them more powerful. Deployment plans are found to saturate Europe with them as some sort of Reploid Final Solution, but the Final Weapon plans superceded it.

Bioweapons research is also found on the Checkpoint Charlie systems. DeVry and Xiang's monstrocity research, devoid of all other pro-social influences, are present. DeVry's work in particular looks to be straight from the source, including specific liner notes directed to his bosses in the UN.

Black SHIELD was aware of, and actively encouraging, this kind of research within their organization to make super-soldiers and disposable monsters. No human cost was too high for Black SHIELD in their pursuit of stronger, faster, tougher and better weapons.

There are a variety of gruesome videos and still photos of captured people -- vagrants, the insane, people no one would `miss' -- being experimented on with ultimately lethal results, either from the process or Black SHIELD's continuing study. Vivisections would take place often while these unfortunates were still conscious so more accurate analysis of the mutations could be made. It's stomach-turning even to the hardest Reploid. Most of this stuff would make your average /Maverick/ vomit.

Further, recent reports indicate that something code named `Mother Unit' was recently stolen from Africa by a Wily-backed criminal organization, but details about it are sketchy aside from it being some sort of extremely powerful "armor". Further details are impossible to find.

Black SHIELD: R&D

Nothing is found in the Black SHIELD R&D files /specifically/ about phase-shift research. There is research there about subspace storage, specifically the possibility of storing entire armored divisions in subspace to be released by remote deployment. Research in this area appears to be highly theoretical, but there are some working computer simulations about it that somebody like Prismatic Spider might be able to decipher.

A lot of Black SHIELD research dealt with genetic engineering, specifically to the end of genetic augmentation of humans. There are a healthy number of files about Black SHIELD's augmentation procedures, which at first would seem to be a goldmine.

After looking at the augmentation procedure, though, it is clear that they've only made it /consistently/ work with their cloned soldiers, since the augmentation process is very intricate and volitile in others. They found a way to make it work in one person, and so kept making that one person over and over again. A handful of other non-clone personnel have that sort of augmentation, with most of them just having minor `boosts' here and there that have to be constantly sustained by injections of a chemical elixir to keep their bodies from rejecting the augmentations and destroying itself.

The common rejection process vaguely resembles MS, and is commonly misdiagnosed as MS or Wollincratz-Gurchieff Syndrome. The bonds between neurons in the brain start to weaken, to the point where the body becomes unable to function and the mind shortly follows. Deaths from the rejection process are always cruel and dehumanizing.

Most of the more successful R&D projects have to do with crops with high tolerances to radiation or toxic waste, probably due to Black SHIELD's willingness to use those sort of weapons on people. There's also a lot of high-energy physics work floating around the database, much of it dealing with particle beam weapons, EMP devices and something called the `anti-Nuclear Winter device'.

Black SHIELD: Partial Roster

Checkpoint Charlie's roster is easily accessible. The majority of the forces there are clone troops, which have little sense of `self'. All of them were killed during the attack. The remainder are scientists, intelligence analysts or mid-ranking members of the organization -- all have been captured or killed.

The rest of the organization's roster is harder to track down, and will take additional time to bash out of the mainframe with the hackers presently available.

Two years later, Alloy's player found the @mails still in his folder and decided to do some followup on them.

Two Years On

BS: Dead Ends

A list of Black SHIELD bases and storage caches is already available to Alloy, as well as Repliforce and the UN itself. Several people have made and re-made this map over the past two years. Almost all of these known sites have been secured by somebody as far as you can guess, though there are some you cannot tell the status of. One of these sites is the present site of Paradise Fountain; another is located near the North Pole.

The roster of people in Checkpoint Charlie, compared to the actual head count, did not completely match up. All of the people RF took into custody were either moved into some other part of the UN or American government, tossed into military prison, or testified against each other in exchange for indentured servitude to some government or another. The handful that are unaccounted for are currently international criminals, and may or may not become relevant later.

The San Angeles incident was the result of a bizarre stellar drive malfunction that Auto and Dr. Cain have extensive notes on. Phase-shift technology does not involve dimensional engineering at all, and is primarily a bridge technology for different types of subspace applications. (That part was only really relevant to Bolero, who is deceased.)

BS: Operatives And Agents

A full accounting of Black SHIELD personnel is still impossible because of the way that data was managed. People are generally confident they knew of the people near the top of the hierarchy and have dealt with them; James Houseman IV, Arkady Boganov, Octavius Simionescu, Harold Magrevich, and several former members of the WEF that were killed during the July 2217 "Maverick attack" on their yearly meeting. Some mid-level people, like Reginald Stafford and other Houseman associates, have also been dealt with by various intelligence organizations. Some got away. Some always get away.

Soldiers of Black SHIELD were less protected. Almost every single one at Checkpoint Charlie, except for one who was reformed and worked for a time in Interpol before fading into obscurity, was killed. (An old OC concept.) Intelligence agents who were compromised and received some kind of augmentation were harder to find and stop. The ones you can get clear records on have generally been apprehended or have been "disappeared". Two stand out due to their incomplete files: a woman codenamed "Needle" and a man codenamed "Match".

"Needle" was a UN wetworks expert who was brought into the organization after showing exemplary promise. Her prodigious physical abilities were augmented by various means, including the Boost process. She is among the most successful agents in the organization's history, according to the fractional record you have of her, "the spiritual successor of the Ice Knife". There is no picture, but there is an incomplete mention of of "family issues relating to the father" in her file as a potential long-term problem.

"Match" has an even weirder file. While "Needle" is a cleaner, "Match" is an infiltrator. His exact point of entry into the organization is unclear, as is his actual allegiance. A quote: "It is a concern that Match has multiple loyalties, all of whom are completely inconsistent with each other ... despite his exceptional skill, we find ourselves wondering who, or what, Match really works for." He may have been captured, killed, or not been present. He may have been an UN infiltrator or a Black SHIELD double, triple, quadruple or quintruple agent, trying to play America, China, Brazil or possibly Disney Universe off of each other. Or vice versa. Also no picture, though mention is made of "vanity".

BS: Assorted Technology

The Mother Unit was apparently a 'ride armor type powered armor' created using 'recovered technology'. It is naggingly unclear as to what this entails, though the word 'extraplanetary' keeps recurring in the pieces of the file. A design sketch shows a 16 foot tall machine with thick arms and weird wing-like blades protruding from its back. It reminds you of a Reaver, though how could they have known about Reavers two years before anyone had ever explored Mars?

That you know of.

Something that looks a hell of a lot like that is associated with the underworld. Rumor has it that a high-ranking criminal boss has control of the armor and uses it to enforce her will. Something /else/ that looks similar to that was in Kraft's report about his adventures in South Africa.

The cryptic mention of an 'anti Nuclear Winter' device doesn't seem to go anywhere. It seems like vaporware; an attempt to counteract a gravity-type weapon with some sort of opposing energy field. Such a thing has only extremely narrow applied use and is only really interesting as basic scientific inquiry into the functioning of high-energy quantum energy.

BS: Genome Soldiers

The person who was cloned appeared to have been naturally 'special'. The DNA analysis seems closer to Strider DNA than any other DNA you might have on file. Striderness pertains to a variety of different genetic factors rather than one particular gene or gene sequence, but it has more similarity to that than other people.

This person does not appear to need any sort of support system to stay alive. People who received the augmentation process unnaturally would probably need maintanence chemicals, most of which would be hard to keep tabs on. It would only take small amounts administered daily or monthly to keep someone like that going. The majority of the work would be in processing the chemicals, which could be done in a private lab after raw materials were acquired. The lab work would be an easier way to track it, but with the proliferation of genetic boutiques, this still would not be easy.

You could try to ask the Striders if they know of anyone who might have volunteered to be the progenitor of a massive clone army. Maybe someone else might know, too.
