Reploids

Reploids are the most common kind of robot in the world, their original programming based on Dr. Light's personality programs, first used and perfected on Rock. The modern reploid neural net was designed by Dr. Doppler, who enabled the mass production of Reploids with his revolutionary designs.

The Reploid neural net was designed with a backdoor programming "feature" that allowed the development of the Maverick Virus by Dr. Doppler. The Sigma Virus, which followed the patch that closed this "feature", exploited the fundamental nature of the DNA Soul. It too has been cured.

Though Reploids come in many shapes and sizes, the standard design for Reploids is that of a mechanical humanoid animal. Twentieth century scientist Dr. Masahiro Mori first theorized that people would be more comfortable around robots who looked humanoid, but not too human-like. This principle, known as the "Uncanny Valley", has carried through to modern Reploid design.

The politically correct explanation for why most Reploids are animal-form is the claim that Reploids are easier to design along an animal template. Difficulties in making fully human-looking designs are regularly listed, but the fundamental issue is that human beings generally do not feel comfortable around human-looking robots.

The predominant animal designs tend to have exaggerated features crafted of armor or other external plating. Very few Reploids have any kind of fur, as it tends to get in the way of joints, weapons, and other systems (and it costs more).

Standard reploid names tend to fall along the lines of 'Attribute Animal,' which uses a feature of the reploid and their animal form as a name. Examples include Cyber Peacock, Slash Beast, and many others. However, Reploids can have many other kinds of names. Few have human-like names.

There are about 250 million Reploids in the world. Most of these Reploids are in the service industry or designed to do heavy industrial jobs. One Reploid can do the work of many humans, and can work for much longer in much less hospitable conditions without being disturbed by them. The ease and comfort of modern living is primarily due to the tireless and often thankless efforts of Reploid laborers.

About 1% of all the Reploids made are for military or paramilitary purposes. This includes the Repliforce, but most of this number are used for police or security work. Most of these Reploids are not particularly powerful. Only a few hundred are really exceptional combat models, as they both cost a great deal more than the average military Reploid and are a lot more dangerous. 10% or so of Reploids could be readily upgraded to become military or paramilitary, but demand for military models has flattened in recent years.

Most Reploids enjoy what they were made to do. This is a combination of soft conditioning and the way Reploid bodies are made. If all you have is a hammer, most problems look like nails. Similarly, if you are made to be a gigantic drilling machine, being a sea captain seems kind of out of one's element. There are exceptions, of course. Reploids who rebel against their lot in life often join the military or various paramilitary groups.
