It's been a long time for the Spider Scientist. Having left active service in Repliforce to pursue undisclosed personal work during a lull in the Robot Wars, he has returned to once again lend his aid. Roboticist, cyberneurologist, and network engineer, Prismatic Spider has worked to keep Repliforce on the cutting edge of military science, and he plans to do so again. Uncompromising in the face of the 'tyrrany of science' that he sees in the Maverick and Robot Master causes, he works with any who would assist in the efforts to overthrow the plans of those who would destroy and enslave using the very technologies that were meant to bring peace and happiness to all... Even if he has to go out and do it himself.

Background

Ch. 1 In The Beginning

Prismatic's story began on January 22, 2213, in the same way as many Reploid's stories do: He was created to serve a purpose. In this case, Prismatic was created to be a Reploid scientist, a task to which the Reploid took after with earnest. The laboratories he was assigned to work in appeared to be typical United Nations projects, the scientists there engaged in projects of moderate value on Reploid construction and cyberneurology. Nothing earthshaking. The irony of the assignment wasn't lost on Prismatic, who guessed that some of these scientists may have had a hand in building him in one way or another. The addition of Prismatic to the teams helped, and if it wasn't for what happened later on, perhaps he would have simply stayed there, becoming a respected UN scientist.

But it was not to be, as the Mavericks made an assault upon the compound, and in the chaos Prismatic did the only thing that appeared to make sense at the time: He hid. In a dark broom closet, the Reploid heard the panic and screams, the yelling and taunts as Repliforce and Hunter forces arrived to help drive the Mavericks off. But the Mavericks got what they came for, leaving the pieces behind for the UN to pick up. The project was canceled, and Prismatic was shuffled off into a different area, the bureaucracy deciding to place him with a different project that was doing research into computer network security, also a hot topic in a world with global networks and trillions of dollars at stake.

He worked diligently, picking up information on computer networking and security to complement his knowledge in Reploid design. He helped with a couple minor breakthroughs in firewalls and authentication, and designed a way to do collaborative work via network on creating Reploid personality seeds during his time there. But his mind kept wandering to thoughts of the world outside the laboratories. Not that he was ignorant of it, he had the knowledge almost all Reploids had of the world, though he was only given the information that was deemed relevant to his work. Prismatic thus augmented his knowledge with the occasional low-level penetration of the firewall for additional news bulletins and research subjects. Even so, he simply didn't see himself as being in a position where he could actively affect the course of events. A paid announcement for Repliforce recruiting circulated through the UN, however, changed his mind... And after extensive discussion with the management, Prismatic Spider received a release from the UN laboratories to enter Repliforce, with his early earning being used to repay for the costs of his construction and maintenance during his time in the UN.

Repliforce boot camp was grueling. He had never experienced such stresses before. He considered giving up, but then considered: He had quit his job for this. He wanted to help people, and make a difference in the world. How could he ever succeed if he gave up now? He managed to pass the remainder of the boot camp without further incident, and joined the tanks of Medical, Science, and Engineering as a recruit medic and researcher.

Given his interest in cyberneurology, it was no wonder that Gate and his Dream Protocol garnered extreme interest from Prismatic, who tried to speak with Gate and offered his assistance, but was rebuffed. The discovery of Atlantis also drew Prismatic's interest, who helped seek out information there with Repliforce, as well as trying to meet the 'Dream Team.' The dissolution of the Dream Team caused Prismatic a large amount of consternation, as he was hoping for a true cure for the Maverick Virus.

Ch. 2 Of Stardroids And Men: The Hour Is Nigh

Prismatic worked tirelessly for some time in the ranks of MSE, proving himself to be dependable and versatile. Promotions came quickly, turnover being what it is in the MSE officer ranks, and Prismatic showed himself to be capable of it. His purpose and goals become more clearly defined as he worked, the increased knowledge and firsthand experiences in the war fortifying his determination to help make a difference.

And then came Starhaven. Prismatic accompanied the research groups when the space stations' stealth failed, and helped to recover part of the information they found. All hell began to break loose, of course, and they evacuated. He was not there for the second trip, the ill-fated time where the researchers inadvertently re-summoned the Stardroids to the earth. Old and new, Stardroids arrived, some heralding a being called Nigh, others fighting against it. During frantic research, the Spider Scientist attempted to make contact and assist the resistance forces, but was mostly unsuccessful. During one contact, he ended up receiving a small spherical refractor crystal of unknown make, as well as a gem that apparently emitted radiation that increased the speed of plant growth from the Stardroid Aquarius. Prismatic was present for the destruction of Scorpio, as he helped to break the hypnotic control over the people present by shutting down the music.

During this time, Prismatic also made an acquaintance of one Adrian Vorlaikal, known as Abernathy. It was odd, but this embittered, justice obsessed diplomat seemed to click with the idealistic scientist over time and many debates. Abernathy, however, chose to follow Procyon, one of the Nigh-aligned Stardroids. Infuriated by the situation, as well as his seeming powerlessness, Prismatic threw himself into his work, and assisted the resistance forces. They were less irritating, and Nigh sounded like bad business.

The efforts culminated in a battle against Nigh itself, an impenetrable force of all-consuming darkness that had destroyed Stardroids and consumed their power. In response, the people of the world pooled their power into a device, striking back against it using the very power it consumed. In the end, Nigh was defeated and the Stardroids gone forever.

Ch. 3 The Seven-Month Itch

The Robot Wars settled into a typical pattern for a while. Abernathy became the leader of Interpol, which was expanded to handle global law enforcement. Prismatic renewed his habit of debating ethics with the Director.

The Arcanum Corporation then revealed that they could resurrect the dead, and provided four Reploids thought killed as proof: King Dragon, Admiral, Data Racooon, and the infamous Double. Prismatic immediately began investigations into the Arcanum Corporation, but as expected, the Corporation lived up to its secretive name. Little was found on it, and life returned to semi-normality...

Until a strange malady began to crop up. A strange, extremely contagious white mold began appearing on Reploids, beginning with King Dragon and Admiral. It appeared to be slowly digesting their metallic parts, feeding on it. It proved to be extremely difficult to remove. Reploids were put into quarantine, panic spread, and Prismatic himself was even infected. Scratching madly, he took to wearing a hazmat suit to prevent communication of the mold as he continued to research...

A convocation of the finest scientific minds gathered, debating potential ways to treat the mold, which proved all but immune to heat, cold, anti biological agents, and more. Eventually, Prismatic suggested that they try using... Lye and water. Amazingly, the solution so simple that everyone had overlooked it worked, and life settled down. Prismatic developed a useful item known as the Gravity Hook, a system that combined gravity manipulation and barrier systems to lock the end of a telescoping rod into place, allowing a skilled user to make full 360-degree movements using the lock point as a central point. This device could ultimately replace parachutes, as well as be integrated into motion systems to allow increased mobility. Prismatic began to carry a pair of Gravity Hooks on his person himself, as a handy precaution. It did indeed come in handy several times.

Ch. 4 Ordo Mundus Novus: A Tale Of Souls And Beamswords

For exemplary effort in the course of duty, Prismatic was promoted to Commander of MSE. There, he directed research and development projects, maintained the medical staff, coordinated engineering efforts, and protected the Repliforce computer networks from attack. It was abut this time that he began taking lessons from a Repliforce Trooper named Ricochet in the ways of the Ride Armor pilot. It served him well in the assault on Mount Kilimanjaro, as the Repliforce troops performed a surprise orbital drop maneuver and successfully destroyed it.

Prismatic more or less ignored the hijinks of the Irregular Overlords, working intently on his many projects. Thus, it came as a shock to learn that a researcher named Berkana had designed a method of being able to convert the readings of a Reploid Neural Net into a form that can be stored in a modern computer and not a specialized neural system. This 'DNA Soul' system spurred Prismatic to attempt to gain information on this new development for his own work, seeking a way to effectively analyze differences between normal Reploid neural nets and those infected by the Maverick Virus.

Gate beat Prismatic to the punch, but the Spider Scientist didn't care. He was ecstatic, reveling in finally having a way to remove the greatest weapon the Mavericks had: Their Virus. Confident, Prismatic set to work on expanding the Virus treatment to any who would take it, as well as distributing this information as much as he could. Defeat of the Virus was a priority to him.

Prismatic never expected the advent of the Sigma Virus. He was there for the attack on Berlin, though he was shot in the head by Tactical Raccoon, and dumped out of the Raiden, which was temporarily stolen by the Mavericks. Prism was put into a coma for approximately two weeks until the damage was repaired. It was likely better that way, as he did not have to watch the horror of Viral Sigma almost singlehandedly annihilating the attacking forces. The Repliforce was routed.

In the aftermath, Prismatic's high spirits began to crumble as reports of this new Virus, the Sigma Virus, began sweeping the world. Many who could have been saved from the Maverick Virus were taken, becoming zealots in the service of the insane and tyrannical Emperor. A variant of the Maverick Virus treatment proved to be effective in stopping early stages of infection, a process that Prismatic put into use immediately.

Soon thereafter, using the failure as a pretense, the new Secretary-General Houseman announced the disbanding of the Repliforce. Some left. Most stayed, Prismatic with them. Instead of open revolt, Repliforce had decided to become a secret army, continuing independently to fight against the Mavericks and Robot Masters. But deprived of funding and resources, Repliforce could barely hold their own, let alone make progress. After putting the Repliforce computer networks into an extreme defensive mode, Prismatic spent a large amount of time hidden in the Atlantis Base, working on ways to make the Repliforce more efficient and overseeing the extraction of the ruined Fortress III. To rebuild it and modernize it, to make it the greatest aerial fortress that was ever conceived, but that was not his most important creation yet...

Ch. 5 The PHOENIX Rises

Prismatic Spider's greatest achievement to date was realized when a despondent Dr. Doppler gave him his complete research work on the Reploid Neural Net, fully detailing his entire process of creation, as well as the existence of the back door that was the trigger for the Maverick Virus (hereafter referred to as the Dopplernomicon). The Spider Scientist also knew of Dr. Cossack's work in resurrecting the dead using a quantum tunneling transference technique, resurrecting the dead Grace as Sasha. Prismatic bartered with Cossack, and gained Dr. Cossack's Black Book, detailing his experimentation to achieve the reincarnation of Grace. Now possessing more information on the Reploid Neural Net than more or less any being alive, combined with the technology of DNA Soul, Prismatic created the Poly-Holistic Operation to Emend Nascent eXperience - The PHOENIX System, a massive, complex system capable of snatching a dying AI from the brink of death... But adhering to his agreement with Dr. Cossack and seeing the wisdom of his advice, he deliberately designed the system to be unable to recover the dead, and ensure that the system could not be modified to do so, fearing that the Mavericks would take it and use it to ensure Sigma's immortality, and cause the Robot Wars to extend into eternity.

It could no longer do that, of course. The information required to convert the system was locked away forever into Prismatic's neural net. Prismatic was surprised, then to learn that Gate wished his assistance on a project... A prototype neural net for the Dream Protocol was damaged, but put into stasis before it sustained permanent damage. The PHOENIX System, designed to repair neural nets, could save it. As such, Prismatic and Gate worked together, Gate designing the body, Prismatic repairing the neural net, as well as helping to add an adaptive weapon system to the warrior.

When it was done, the warrior Hi-Max was born, a staunch defender of justice and right. Pending activation, a new crisis arose: Houseman was exposed as a member of a secret organization dedicated to controlling the world, called Black SHIELD.

In the ensuing battle, Prismatic's friend Abernathy was killed. In a rage, Prismatic joined the assault on one of the bastions of Black SHIELD, and along with Interpol and Repliforce troops, annihilated the defenses. Abernathy was avenged, and the world reeled from the revelations about how deep Black SHIELD's tendrils went. Sarah Fairchild took up Abernathy's place. A determined woman, Prismatic was genial to her and showed interest in her drone technology. But the loss of Abernathy was hard on him, and he threw himself into his work, helping to coordinate the freeing of Africa from Wily control.

Ch. 6 The Force Metal Is With You

The PHOENIX System found another use, as he resurrected the near-dead Hunter Seminole, having been kept in stasis for years after his destruction by Vile. He was saved from the brink of total collapse, and the Hunter rejoined their ranks, much to Anthem's delight.

The GSTE that year was a gala affair, where the scientists revealed their new developments that would change the face of the planet. Prismatic unveiled his PHOENIX System, to the astonishment of the the assembled. All went well until an unassuming scientist by the name of Gaudile revealed his new science: Force Metal, and his creation Cinnamon, who used the power of the metal to heal. Dr. Psyche interrupted the affair, and Prismatic Spider leaped into the fray, helping to get Gaudile out of the way of the rampaging Dr. Psyche, though he took serious damage in the effort.

Ch. 7 Once More Into The Breach

As things appeared to be getting quiet once more, Prismatic decided to take a leave of absence. Having it granted, Prismatic applied to and was accepted into MIT's Reploid doctorate program, where he earned his degree. Although officially a Doctor now, Prismatic doesn't insist on the title, much like he rarely had to assert his Commander rank in Repliforce. Using some of his carefully-saved and stocked funds from his work in Repliforce, Prismatic began engaging in research of the enigmatic Force Metal, and what it could theoretically mean for the people of the planet. The exhibited potential of the metal could mean great or terrible things for those who could unlock it's secrets, as already shown by the radically different productions of Gaudile and Psyche.

And then the world was rocked by the battles of Giga City. Prismatic was concerned, but continued his research.

However, when he learned of Gate's fall into madness, the Reaverbot incident, and the theft of one of the two PHOENIX Systems that Prismatic left in Repliforce care, Prismatic could put off his return no longer. Returning to Repliforce, older, and hopefully wiser, the Spider Scientist prepares once more to enter the fray...

Trivia/Cool Facts

Children

Toccata - A new creation gone horrible awry when the personality seed of a Maverick (Psych Mosquito) was unknowingly substituted for the data Prismatic was going to use. Unstable, but not malicious, Prismatic helped give him a purpose and gave him a recommendation to try to gain a place with the Hunters.

Caduceus Catfish - A peace-loving medic who left Repliforce to join the Red Cross and become a fantasy writer.

Soul Nightshade - A Bioroid medical unit who possesses a powerful energy-siphoning system for defensive and maintenance uses, as well as specializing in biological research.

Hi-Max - Proud Replforce warrior of justice. Prismatic's nephew, and his own link into the Gatebot family.

Poseidon Pegasus - Prismatic's first Reaverbot, firefighter and medical unit.

Hacking

Prismatic Spider has an avatar called, appopriately enough, PrismaticSpider.EXE. The avatar is currently in its second (Beta) revision, having been recoded after his return to Repliforce. It looks like Prismatic Spider with lines of energy running through him in a pattern reminiscent of a circuitboard. (See: TRON) Despite his relative disadvantage to the 'Big Guns' of cyberspace, he has made a name for himself with his skill and tenacity, often overcoming heavy odds to succeed.

  • Led a hacking expedition into Umbrella space to get the data on the Genocide Virus the day before it was released (On a tipoff by Mister Famous).

Inventions

  • The PHOENIX System - An invasive emergency system to correct and copy a failing neural net to a blank one, saving a Reploid.
  • Gravity Hooks - Extendable rods that use gravity and barrier tech to create an immovable point in a space which the rode can rotate in full motion around.
  • Nebula Storm Ammunition - A two-stage artillery shell that explodes into a fine powder and spreads quickly. The second stage is a powerful electrical charge that ionizes the cloud and causes powerful electromagnetic disturbances within. The powder is generally harmless on its own. (Ranged Gravity/Electric attack.)
  • Project DAEMON - A cyberspace framework that can be customized with powerful attack and defensive programs, and piloted by an authorized avatar. Also known as Virtual Ride Armor. Repliforce's Virtual Ride Armor is King Dragon.EXE.

In Progress:

  • Project Achilles - TOP SECRET
  • NAVI Soul - An AI core for cyberspace avatars, designed to allow for a measure of minor independence in order to counter the advantages of Direct Neural Interfacing over those who do not.
