Plutarch, a name not widely known outside of Oxford University's Bodleian Library and certain internet groups, is a simple librarian with extraordinary zeal for efficiency. Created as one of a set of reploids commissioned by the University as part of an experiment (later deemed successful) in reploid-human interaction and administrative redesign, Plutarch is now part of the Bodleian's Classics department.

Online, however, he is the often-cryptic and difficult to read historian and elder patriarch of the Greeks, a constant presence in the Forum and generally the only constant in the group. While himself an accomplished hacker, Plutarch rarely partakes of the conflicts his comrades enjoy so much, preferring to teach neophyte Greeks and converse and share with visitors to the Forum. His Fantasy Quest episode gives him a slight notoriety outside of the Forum which he does not pursue.

Fantasy Quest

It is said that Plutarch, after hearing one too many complaints about lag on Fantasy Quest from Greeks and various others known to him, hacked the game and became the 'ghost in the machine' for about a year. For a time, the librarian spent all of his free time working on the inside of Fantasy Quest without the knowledge of its programmers and maintainers, seamlessly rewriting the code of the game so that it ran better and, more importantly (to him), faster. Minor malfunctions and errors were blamed by players on the invisible, mysterious Plutarch, but he is also often credited with having created some of the more entertaining instances. Whether this is true or not is not obvious to anyone, and Plutarch refuses to comment. It is still a FQ tradition among some more computer literate players to curse the name of Plutarch when one is affected by a minor bug, and to praise him when lag subsides. No legal action has been pursued against Plutarch as the authors of Fantasy Quest remain only marginally aware of his existence, and claim that the improved speed of the game was part of a planned update by their own programmers. Rumors that an independent hacker was responsible for the changes are so rare, in any case, that FQ 'officials' feel no need to address them. At this time, Plutarch is no longer 'living' in Fantasy Quest, having finished whatever self-appointed task he gave himself and retreated back to the Forum to conduct another such task.

The Greeks try not to complain about lag anymore.
