"They say beauty's in the eye of the beholder, but I deem you all too ugly to live... for I am the beholder!"
Might Hyena was originally made by a Canadian development team as part of a team of Reploid strongmen who were to fight in the Combat competitions in the Battle & Chase of 2218. However, when the news broke that the Combat competitions were canceled that year due to fears of the Sigma Virus, the team manager ordered the entire team to be put in stasis until a cure was found. Witnessing his friends being placed in tubes, Might had enough of the manager's treatment of Reploids. He proceeded to break out of the team headquarters to flee the manager and begin a new career in the fashion industry, having been secretly convinced to by his designer weeks prior to the manager's announcement. Rechristening himself "Passion Hyena," the Reploid began to preen himself, trying to look as good as possible, and got a job modeling clothes for several clothing store chains. Now, he fights for the Irregular cause, but even that hasn't deterred his quest for beauty; not only does he put his fighting skills to use, but he also works as the fashion specialist for the more fashion-impaired Reploids in Epsilon's group, and he still likes beautiful things. Along with his strength and endurance, his other features as a Reploid built for combat include a bladed grappling hook/gripper mechanism for the purpose of getting him to high places or grabbing objects (including other Reploids) to drag over to him, as well as an electric generator with which he can emit an electric sphere from one palm, and electrocute things he's grabbed with his arms, gripper, or otherwise. Needless to say, he will not let his electrifying beauty go unnoticed.
Background
On Prince Edward Island, Canada, there exists a Reploid development company known as Crawley Development, named for its founder, Richard Crawley. A relatively-new company, they set up shop in Summerside in 2215 because the province itself was very little known, being very rural and quiet. By setting themselves up in a lesser-known location, it ensured to the company that their headquarters would not be under attack by any evildoers (no matter how prominent) intent on stealing their data or otherwise. This was rather successful, as the company remained relatively undisturbed for most of their lifetime. The company itself formed to build Reploids which they treat as humanely as possible so that it is ensured they will integrate with the human population perfectly. This was the policy they followed all the way up to 2218.
That year, in July, they received one of their first commissions in two years. Ibrahim Granås, a Norwegian-American team manager, had requested Crawley Development to build a combat Reploid in order fill the last remaining slot in the Crusaders of Power, a team of Reploids who would individually participate in the Light and Heavy Combat tournaments in the 2218 Battle & Chase competitions. More specifically, they needed a Light Combat warrior. Ibrahim wanted Crawley Development to design the Reploid in the image of a human strongman, and install a mix of a grappling hook and "magic hand" (an implement designed to grab objects from a long distance) in one hand, plus an electric generator in his body, and an electric sphere gun in the other hand. He also insisted the company base him upon a spotted hyena, believing that the hyena's perceived "ugly" looks would make his opponents underestimate him. Little did anybody know that Fritz Becker, the head of the design team chosen to create his frame, had a whole different agenda in mind.
Becker had always wanted to make a Reploid who could fit in the fashion business. The Reploid could model clothes and perform other such functions required of the industry. However, he had intended to make a humanoid; when he was told his team had to design a hyena Reploid, he cringed. Becker had to make due, though, with the plans he had, and his team began work on making a body articulately made to resemble a human strongman's body, even with the hyena features. While the Reploid was designed for combat, Fritz hoped that eventually, he could convince Might Hyena to begin his intended job.
On the day he was to be transfered to the Crusaders of Power, a security guard walked by a meeting room door that morning and heard what sounded like two masculine voices speaking. He thought nothing of it, however, and he walked away. Minutes later, Might Hyena, in the athletic uniform designed for him, exited the Meeting Room, and upon finishing his preparations, he headed to the headquarters of the Crusaders of Power elsewhere in Summerside. It was there that he and the rest of the team began training over the span of a few weeks in the holographic training room for the 2218 Battle & Chase Light and Heavy Combat tournaments. In the meanwhile, however, Might Hyena was thinking over what Fritz Becker had told him inside the meeting room the day he left Crawley Development.
In August, however, the news broke out that both of the Combat tournaments in 2218's Battle & Chase were canceled due to fears of the Sigma Virus. Because of this, the Crusaders of Power were no longer useful for their intended function. Ibrahim Granås could have done many things. He could have gotten them recruited in Repliforce to join the fight against evil. He could have brought them to any company that requested them as bodyguards. He could even have had their weaponry removed and allowed them to live civilian lives. Instead, however, he ordered something that would have sent Reploid-conscious ethics groups into a furor: He wanted the entire team to be put in stasis until a cure to the Virus could be found.
Watching his friends get put in stasis one by one, Might Hyena decided he couldn't take it anymore. When he was next in line to be put in stasis (he was the last one,) he broke free of the people escorting him and bellowed this shocking announcement to the whole room:
"I'm tired of all this! I'm outta here! I'm heading out to become a fashion model and you can't stop me!"
The security guards inside the room reached for their EMP guns. Before the guards could fire off a shot on him, however, he ran to the side and leapt through the window. Clutching the trunk of one of the trees below, he dropped to the ground, and then began his mad dash away from Granås's establishment... and Prince Edward Island. He ran out of Summerside and covered twenty-eight kilometers (eighteen miles) total, and then fled across the Confederation Bridge to New Brunswick. It was inside this province that Might Hyena shed his old name, and took up a new name: Passion Hyena. Soon, he began to search throughout the province for jobs in stores needing Reploids to model their clothes, and soon found some for several clothing chains over in Moncton. The Hyena had been convinced by Fritz Becker after all.
On his way to another job for a chain in Québec, he encountered a humanoid Reploid who wielded butcher knives in either hand and wore a chef's uniform. Passion Hyena found the Reploid highly unusual, especially since the chef somehow managed to incorprate food into every sentence he spoke. The Reploid explained that he was working for the Irregulars, a faction of Reploids and cyborgs working under the one and only Epsilon, and he went out to recruit new members for the organization. At first, Hyena declined, but when the Reploid told him that he could be the faction's fashion specialist as well as a soldier, Passion decided to join. Thus, he went along with this unusual character over to where the Irregular Overlords resided, to become part of the Irregular cause.
Upon entering the Irregular ranks, Passion Hyena commissioned a uniform that he designed himself to a popular clothings manufacturer in Canada. After three days of training to enter the army ranks, the uniform arrived just in time for the Hyena to wear. Now, with his original weaponry and his beauty, Passion Hyena strives to defend the cause of the Irregulars, and most of all, to make himself and his allies look as pretty as possible.
Trivia/Facts
- Passion has been variously portrayed as being either homosexual or bisexual. After a training battle with Sugar, they each offered to give each other their photos, indicating him being attracted to women. On the other hand, he possesses stereotypical homosexual traits, such as being obsessed with fashion, frequently posing seductively, and wearing all leather. He also once attempted to ask Fashionable Feline out on a date, but failed due to the latter being heterosexual.
- His personal soccer uniform is made entirely out of vinyl and bears the number "69."
- He has, in the past, been attracted to Sclera.
- He often makes fellow Irregular Chronoton Duck carry his groceries whenever he goes out shopping.
- He was present in the Irregular Ball Handlers when they won the final of the 2219 Battle and Chase Soccer Tournament. He was also present at the final of the following year's tournament, but the team lost to Dr. Wily's Team of Guys Better Than You (i.e. the Robot Masters.)
Other
Formerly, the character had been apped for a derivative of Mega Man MUSH known as Mega Man MUSH: Dark Prophecy as a Maverick. Following its death, he was apped as an Irregular for the second Irregular Overlords TP. His quote is identical to the original Dark Prophecy version.
