This file is meant to help people interested in applying for original characters here on M3. This is advice, not rules, although if you follow the broad outlines, you will increase your chances of being approved as well as likely have more fun.

Background: Generally, you will want to make your character's background interesting but not completely dominant or outshining whatever they might do in the grid. Being an experienced soldier or having interesting stories to tell is entirely fine; however, you want to focus your energy on what your character WILL do, or IS doing, rather than on what he has done.

Some background elements are overdone (dead siblings/parents/entire family, being created by a solitary genius in a remote town). If you can thread a story using one of these elements, it can be alright; however, you may get better results if you look at what you're trying to evoke.

For example, by creating a character with a single isolated creator, you might be trying to provide them with a parent figure who might also be in need of protection, or who might be occasionally useful in roleplay. You can get the same effect by having a project team leader from the factory where your character was built, who helped him or her through her early days and remains a close friend.

Personality

It is recommended that you give specific descriptive detail when you have conflicting traits. "He is very friendly to his allies but very mean to his enemies" does not make for a notable personality trait, because it's pretty much the expected behavior. Similarly, "He is normally very orderly and precise, except sometimes when he's totally random and jokes around," is not... Unless you tie them together, for instance by saying that the character is very orderly and precise about professional matters, but is extremely carefree and loose about social relationships.

Try to make things all hang together as if they're part of an organic whole.

For instance, a character who is certain of his own superiority might well get into arguments with factional leadership and attempt to seize the spotlight, both in situations where he has an advantage and in situations where he does not. Connect this to a particular talent in some field and it will all make sense even if someone only sees a small part of it.

For more advice about writing up original characters, please feel free to ask questions on channel or speak to your faction staffer.
