Maverick Virus

The name 'Maverick Virus' is something of a misdemeanour.

In the original few years of the Robot War, when the Mavericks rose to prominence, it was believed that the Maverick virus was a communicable infection that caused reploids to wish to kill humans. Androids, but not Bioroids, were definitely known to be immune to it. For a great many years, this would be the considered norm, making many people incredibly suspicious of anyone who socialised with Mavericks.

However, the truth was far more insidious. Doctor Doppler, the creator of the reploids, was never able to finish the programming of reploids due to the UN. What was considered the 'Maverick Virus' was a simple program designed to essentially 'flip a switch' in a reploid's programming. The desire to destroy all humans, assert reploid superiority and feel camraderie amongst reploids was programmed into all reploids from birth, buried deep in their DNA Soul, and upon willingly taking the Maverick Virus- the only true means of becoming a Maverick, as anyone who was unwillingly given the 'virus' would find it self-deleting from their neural net without harm to them- the switch would be flipped, completing Doctor Doppler's programming.

The discovery of the truth of the Maverick Virus was done by the UN scientist Gate. Using the newly pioneered DNA Soul research, he gathered profiles of a great number of reploids, including those of his close family, his allies and himself. When analysing the reploid Alpha, who had recently taken the Maverick Virus and the identity of 'One', he discovered the switch, which greatly disturbed many of those present at the analysis. He simply flipped the switch back, and the Maverick Virus was cured.

Following the 'cure' being devised, many Mavericks abandoned the faction, taking the cure and answering for their crimes, such as Mimos and Krieger Wolf. A Maverick suicide bombing was the answer of the Mavericks to Gate's discovery, and began a downward spiral that resulted in the first death of Sigma in Italy.

The Maverick Virus was superceded by the Sigma Virus as a result of this.
