Profile
Marvin Thackery died as he lived; a patriot. His storied and controversial life led him through a variety of roles; a UN army officer, a UN senator, the governor of Alabama, the Democratic Senator from Alabama -- as well as husband, father and grandfather. Marvin Thackery rose to the Presidency by the valorous sacrifice of Dion Seers, who threw himself into the way of a laser shot fired by Cyber Peacock meant for himself. President Seers' death was the turning point in Marvin Thackery's life, who vowed to take back America from the robots who had overrun it once and for all. He undertook an extensive military campaign against Albert Wily in San Angeles that ultimately ended when the global emergency of 2221 forced American forces to go into a defensive posture. As the horror of the zombie apocalypse played out before him, Thackery was forced to confront his own role in creating the world he lived in. When Wily came to destroy Washington, Marvin Thackery fought alongside the Repliforce he once villified, repenting for his actions against them and Reploids. Marvin fought bravely, and in the end chose to sacrifice himself to protect Colonel from Wily's final attack. Thackery's legacy lives on -- but as a man whose strong moral convictions ultimately saw him seek unification and peace with robotic life rather than a politically motivated bigot.
Background
Marvin Alexander Thackery was born on November 11, 2152 in Mobile, Alabama. His parents, Alexander and Susan, were devout Southern Baptists. His father was a traveling preacher who made his money off fire-and-brimstone tent revivals, while his mother managed the finances and maintained the business. His father's blistering charisma is still seen in the way Marvin likes to stir up trouble.
Marvin went through the public school system in Alabama, where he was a consistent B student. He played football in high school, but found his real passion in life when he got into the Junior ROTC. The structured, highly disciplined lifestyle of a soldier suited Marvin, who had never known anything else but discipline and order in his parents' household. When the war in China escalated, Marvin eagerly went into basic training just after his 18th birthday and was on the front by January.
Facing the grim, horrible nature of human conflict only seemed to invigorate Marvin. He spent most of his twenties on the front in China, which he has referred to as the best days of his life. Those under his command generally comment favorably on him, though he earned his reputation as a relentless, single-minded commander in the mountains of China. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel before a spinal cord injury in March of 2183 caused him to have to sit out the rest of the Chinese War.
While recovering from his wounds, Marvin met Emily Gan, a nurse at the veterans' hospital in Seoul where he was recuperating. They were married shortly after the end of formal hostilities in China in 2185, and Marvin passed up the military fast-track in favor of being stationed back in Alabama once the UN took over most military operations in 2187.
The following twenty years were fairly uneventful. Marvin and Emily have had three children; Han Marvin Thackery, born in 2186; Jane Ning Thackery, born in 2188; and Shan Alexander Thackery, born in 2190. The Thackery family lived on base in Huntsville and enjoyed the peace dividends the UN had earned by crushing all opposition. By his 47th birthday, Marvin had figured that he was well on his way to becoming a colonel, and possibly becoming a brigadier general by the time he retired.
Everything went pear-shaped for Marvin when the Robot Wars began. Marvin was expecting the opportunity to once again earn valor, and recapture his lost youth, by blowing the hell out of some robots. However, the three years of warfare against the Robot Masters tore a bloody swath through the underprepared UN forces. Most had never even seen real combat action aside from limited engagements here and there. It was a rude awakening for many. Marvin cursed the weakness of the new generation and drove them even harder to try to make up for their shortcomings.
When Repliforce was created, Marvin was furious with the UN for giving up on them. Even though the war against Wily was won, and then later the war against the renegade Reploids was also won, it was Repliforce and not the human soldiers of the UN who received the praise and respect of the people. His own forces were looked upon as pathetic, lampooned in an unsympathetic media and treated like throwbacks to another age. Demoralized and defeated, most of the UN forces were decommissioned and given early retirement.
On January 1, 2207, at the age of 54, Marvin Thackery felt like a beaten man. For almost a year, he tried to get employment just to get himself out of the house. He found himself increasingly frustrated as Reploids seemed to be getting more and more opportunities to succeed while he felt under-trained, underappreciated and increasingly irrelevant. Depression gradually transformed into fury, and after one (heavily dramatized) day where every single job he had tried to apply for had been taken by a Reploid, Marvin vowed that he would put an end to the decline of mankind himself.
Marvin ran for a House seat in 2208, relying on his bonds with the poor people of his district. He defeated the incumbent in the primary, and then took political analysts by surprise by winning the November election. He started to gain state-wide, then regional attention for his passionate advocacy for human civilization. He created a political action committee named the Children of Eve to raise money and campaign for candidates with a similar "pro-human" ideology. By 2210, Marvin was planning on making a Senate run in an effort to gain more national exposure.
The Democratic Party, concerned about Marvin's increasing popularity in the south, made Marvin a better offer in order to prevent him from splitting the base during a critical election year. In 2210, Marvin was appointed to represent the United States in the United Nations. While isolated from US politics, Marvin saw an opportunity to attempt to dismantle or otherwise weaken Repliforce in favor of a new human-centered UN military. The Children of Eve were able to benefit from Marvin's new international position and began to become very influential in political races around the world. Internationally, Marvin was seen as a crank, but this time in the world spotlight raised his prestige among like-minded humans.
In 2214, Marvin had his first opportunity to try to dismantle Repliforce, but was unable to build momentum because of the quick resolution of the crisis. Undeterred, Marvin attempted to once more cast Repliforce into a bad light by allegedly arranging for his own kidnapping, but his alleged ruse failed. To prevent further legal action by the UN, Marvin Thackery resigned from the Senate in early 2215 and went back to Alabama to restart his political career.
Marvin Thackery ran for governor of Alabama in 2215 and won a decisive victory driven by anti-Reploid sentiment among the urban poor. His administration was known for its strong support of local industry and numerous lawsuits filed by Reploids claiming that the policies of the state purposefully disadvantaged Reploids. Thackery remained popular among humans throughout the legal battles, and campaigned for Democrats throughout the south to consolidate his support nationally once in office.
Controversy surrounded Thackery and his administration as Neo Arcadia became ascendant because of the Children of Eve being strongly linked to the revolution. However, Thackery managed to sail through the challenges without being tarred because of his skillful insulation from the group (driven by tax law changes) during the 2210s. In some quarters, Thackery developed even more credibility by being supported by the militant pro-human group.
When the UN collapsed in 2217, Marvin Thackery prepared to start a Senate run, claiming that he needed to help America guide itself through the rough times ahead. Despite a strong national shift to the Republican party, Thackery was able to win a decisive victory in Alabama to enter the US Senate. Now with the full support of his party, Marvin Thackery is poised to be placed in the most senior position in the Senate if the Democrats retake Congress this year.
At present, Marvin Thackery has no legal ties at all to the Children of Eve. He doesn't seem to take any money from them, though PACs have had centuries to learn how to funnel money to people innocuously. He has court documents that show his complete separation from the group well before the Aztlan revolution, and the Children of Eve themselves claim that he is an entirely separate entity. However, the Children continue to quietly endorse Thackery, and Eve supporters are not uncommon sights at Thackery's events.
