Character Data

"Preparation does not guarantee victory. Lack of preparation, however, guarantees defeat."

Profile

A weapons expert and battle tactician, Layer was hired on by the Maverick Hunters to train their new recruits in coordinated battle tactics. A former Operator for Great Britain's Troia Base outpost, she and her younger sister Pallette's combined skills saved dozens of lives from a Maverick raid. Calm to the point of aloofness, Layer is unflappable even in dire of situations. With clear, focused thinking under pressure, she is an unshakable pillar of support to the Hunters in times of need. Layer's skills with a blade are excellent, and she seems to be able to intuitively discover her enemy's weak points from observation alone. Her ability to plan out combat strategies and form countless contingency plans on the fly make her a valuable asset on any mission. At heart, she is a bit of a romantic, though she tries to deny it. She can be awkward in social situations that don't rely on her specialties, and Pallette often has to coax her to come out of her shell.

Background

Layer and her sister, Pallette, were originally created together to be used as a part of the team managing England's Reploid-training facility, the Troia Base. Layer was designed to help as an Operator, working more with the development of training simulations within the base and helping those who needed it through their training. She was, in addition, given combat capabilities in the case of emergency; her skills were focused on melee style combat, to balanced her sister's ranged style.

It wasn't thought that the base would be attacked by one of its own, Optic Sunflower, but after he had gone berserk in a freak accident during some maintenance Layer and Pallette were sent to help stop what he had triggered: a Maverick invasion. Fortunately, between brains and brawn the sisters utilized everything within the base, and themselves to hold off the attackers until help arrived, and they managed to make it through.

This incident had brought the two of them to the Hunters, as their abilities were needed, and they had wanted to help after knowing what a threat the Mavericks really were. Layer's abilities as a trainer came to fruition here, as she proceeded to help with training new recruits and eventually fighting among those of the Hunters, as one of them. While a little shy and not very outgoing she did get integrated very quickly due to the help of her sister, and has been an integral part of the force ever since.

IC History

Layer has had an interesting history with the Hunters that has simultaneously bonded her with them and also distanced herself from them. As the result of her shyness, she had always been quiet, notable for keeping her feelings on the inside and never really talking things over with others. The reason for this is simple, as she has always had an issue trusting other people, even those within the Hunters.

Because of her always holding in and bottling up her feelings, Layer wound up having a major breakdown following internal strife regarding a friendship developed with Umbra Phantom, and then torture from and problems with Blazing Flizard; because of this, Layer has seemed to have a fragile emotional state as of late, an issue she has never had until recently. While finding herself to be less shy, her nervousness around others and lack of trust of people has grown to the point where Layer herself has questioned whether she's fit to be a Hunter.

Umbra Phantom

The reason Layer and Phantom became friends oddly started out as conflict between the two, back during an incident where Cinnamon had been kidnapped by Dr. Weil. The two swordweilders dueled, but not just with blades but with words as well; Phantom, with trust fading in his beliefs, talked about how robots are soulless machines and need to die, while Layer challenged his words and his beliefs. While losing the physical battle, Layer's words had begun a change in Phantom's ideals, as he began to wonder whether robots were perhaps more than he had always believed.

Time passed, and Layer wrote a book to raise profits for local charities. Phantom, disguised, showed up at a book signing, and oddly enough a friendship between the two began over the radio, with Phantom doing a good job of keeping Layer fooled as to who he really was. He explained his past to her and how he was with Neo Arcadia; Layer went on to show him through her words that robots were more than what he had believed, and as Phantom began to realize that perhaps robots were more than what he had believed, he began to change. It was noticeable in the fact that from that moment on Phantom had never killed an innocent reploid, even up to his death.

However, as her friendship with Phantom was eventually found out, Layer found herself seriously distanced from the rest of the Hunters who viewed her trust in him as foolish. The friendship eventually dwindled to a halt as both sides eventually stopped talking to each other, though not on bad terms, and eventually ended with Phantom's falling under control of the Professor, and then his death at the hands of Prometheus. Layer, to this date, is very touchy about the subject, and tries hard not to bring it up, even if it hurts her on the inside a lot.

Blazing Flizard

Blazing Flizard, one of Weil's Numbers, wound up becoming a rival to Layer for a long period of time. It generally began with a couple of fights between the two as Flizard did bad things and Layer coincidentally showed up to stop him, but the rivalry never really took off until one battle in the streets of Chinatown in San Angeles.

The fight escalated, but Layer wound up losing, almost getting killed as her power core was ripped out of her. From that moment on, Flizard became more than just an enemy, as Layer's desire to trump him and prevent what he did to her from happening to others fueled an intense training. More fights went on.

Over time, though, the two grew to understand each other, at least a little. Flizard saw a lot of potential in her, and out of a desire to turn her into a destructive force, concocted a plot. Layer was eventually kidnapped and put through physical torture, nearly breaking her for a time through physical, mental, and verbal abuse. Layer personally experienced flashbacks for a good month before finally beginning to seriously get back on her feet, but the fact that none of the Hunters came to save her shook her faith and trust in the others in her own organization, a scar that's healed a little due to an understanding that she was a diversion to an invasion of Eurasia, but not entirely.

Time passed after that. Layer found the courage and strength to continue fighting thanks to support of friends she knew cared; Blaze Heatnix, Cinnamon, and Massimo were the biggest ones to help her through this, though others were there as well. The fight with Flizard kept on, Layer bent to stop him at every turn, Flizard bent on turning her into a killing machine. However, after crossing the line by attacking Pallette, and revealing to Layer what his intent was all along, Flizard wound up undoing what psychological hold he might've had on Layer, as Layer finally began to realize who she truly fought for... the ones she loved, Pallette being the number one.

The two eventually concluded their saga on the final day of the Ragnarok TP, within Ragnarok itself. With everything within her, Layer managed to completely defeat Blazing Flizard, as Asita Tau, the person behind the mask, came to attack her. However, Layer delivered the final blow to the man, a single thrust through his heart, finally defeating him once and for all. Despite this, though, with Asita's dying words, he shook Layer's thoughts, saying that Layer will always follow war forever, and that he would meet her in Valhalla.

Whether this prediction will come true or not is uncertain... and something Layer will always wonder and be wary about.
