Profile

Condescending, conniving, conceited, cruel - all words that could be used to describe the fifth Robot Master Elite, King. Originally one of many contingency plans in the case of Wily's demise, King was accidentally activated early and took over the Robot Masters until being defeated by Bass; rebuilt and completely ignorant of his coup, King imagines himself to be the first in a new line of Robot Masters and the sign of great things to come. As such, King tends to consider himself superior to the other Robot Masters, even the other Elites, and largely wields his power to his own ends (while still serving Wily), biding his time until he takes his destined throne. King often seems like the worst sort of tyrant to people both in and out of the Masters. However, those who disagree with him often have to face his finely crafted Tower Shield and menacing Executioner's Axe, proving him a powerful rallying point for the Robot Masters - a point he is more than happy to press to his advantage when his worth is questioned.

Background

King was created along with several other nearly-identical contingency robots (i.e. Patriarch) in the event that Dr. Wily should die; in that case, King would take over as leader of the Robot Masters. However, on May 22, 2213, Wily went missing, and the King Protocol activated. King and his Court promptly kicked Bass out of the Masters, declared themselves the new rulers, and two days later King fired the cannon from the Wily Star and destroyed Hope, Nevada. Later acts included killing Requiem when she protected Bass.

All in all, King remained king for approximately a month (less than that, actually); on June 12th, Wily was found in a mental asylum, and Bass promptly killed King. Wily later rebuilt him, but without the contingency protocol (presumably) and with no memory of his temporary coup, as well as a mental block over said coup and any discussion of it. Since then, King has become the fifth Elite, thinking of himself as the sign of things to come, a brand new Robot Master model, and the eventual leader... eventually.

Personality

Above all things, King is royal. He's got the attitude down to a T, to say the least. King takes his name, and himself, very seriously. Since there had to be a reason for his existence, King gradually assumed that due to his awesome nature, he was due to be the first in a new line of Robot Masters. The fact that no one like King has ever been produced en masse simply cements this idea in his mind. Furthermore, against all odds, learning of the existence of Patriarch simply convinced him more of his own greatness. Why? King rationalizes that he is so vital to Dr. Wily's plans that he, the original King, had to stay behind on Earth while the lesser Patriarch was shipped to Mars in a capsule. Furthermore, King reasons, he has never had to steal the abilities of other robots to secure his position of power; rather, he does it by being extremely, extremely entitled. Patriarch, on the other hand, had to turn on his own allies to prove himself the rightful ruler of the Robot Gentlemen, a dishonorable act by any measure.

Unfortunately, not everyone else bows down to the King. This means King comes off as a self-righteous asshole to a lot of people, and frankly, he's fine with that. King is something of a self-righteous asshole. He's condescending towards anyone he considers lesser than him (read: pretty much everyone), he's conniving, and he's cruel to those within his own organization who slip up and even moreso towards those outside the Masters who cross his path. King is also overconfident, cocky, self-assured to the nth degree, and (perhaps thanks to his latest bout of programming adjustments) speaks in a royal We. Why? Because King is the King. Most of his attitude boils down to the fact that he knows - KNOWS - that he's the Next Big Thing. All he has to do is carefully serve Wily, bide his time (and when you're a robot, you can afford to be very very patient), and eventually kill the other challengers to Wily's throne - because there will be at least two or three.

King spares no time for the weak or the ineffective. He's a big believer in natural selection, and considers himself at the top of the 'food chain'. Those who have proven time and time again to be failures and general wastes of life get nothing but disdain from the king; not everyone deserves a second chance, and most people don't deserve a third. However, when they do... it will be on his terms. King prides himself on being a manipulator par excellence, and tends to wield his power (unlike Enker) largely for his own ends - though to all appearances, it still serves Wily's goals, and may in fact do so. King will not directly harm Wily, nor put others in a position to do so, but almost anyone else is expendable. Especially Quint.

King is very calm and level-headed, can be very single-minded; most of his thoughts have to do with (1) how to bring the Robot Master rule to the entire planet, (2) how to drive his enemies before him, (3) what to do in the event Dr. Wily dies, a.k.a. King's Elaborate Plan For Taking Over The Robot Masters. He is, however, quiet about his goals. King is not a backstabber - this cannot be emphasized enough. However, he does like to take care of all the eventualities, and can overplan from time to time; he does not always adjust well to unaccounted-for reactions and actions, and when confronted with a situation gone wrong, King is capable of a furious rage - the exact opposite of his normal personality.

Like a medieval villain, King vastly enjoys great plots and elaborate conspiracies. King considers himself well-read and extremely experienced, as befits one of his standing within the Masters. All people below him are chess pieces, moved in an enormous game of thrones, and King considers himself an able and powerful chessmaster - the Black King, to be sure. His morality is pretty much non-existent; King does not find any act to be too horrid to serve his cause and Wily's. He figures the more he does to further himself in Wily's eyes, the more likely it is that he'll end up at the right place (the top) at the right time (when it's time to rule). He can be rather tyrannical, and perhaps a bit paranoid about those who might be plotting against him, but only the correct amount of paranoia. Too much makes one ineffective, King reasons; too little makes one Julius Caesar.

It is due to this comparison that King does not foster relationships outside the faction, as some do. He may speak civilly with those who are not Masters, but he considers no man below his station a friend or an equal, just as a king of old would not freely associate with a pauper. Likewise, he frequently is among the Robot Masters, speaks with them, even spends time with them on occasion - but they are merely an array of courtiers, servile, useful, bowing and scraping. King confides in no one but himself and his creator, and in rare circumstances his court - perhaps the only people who truly understand his whims, his real nature, and his kingliness. If King is King Arthur, the Omega Masters are his Round Table; if he is the Jade Emperor, then they are his fellow gods. King may not be close with them, but the King's Court are the closest things King has to friends. Not that it troubles him; King is so self-reliant he truly does not believe friendship to be a necessary virtue for a ruler. On the other hand, every good king DOES need an army. King does not always take steps to exacerbate his fellows, and may be one of the fairest Elites when it comes to doling out punishment - King may be cruel, but he is always willing to expound at length on exactly why a Master is stuck doing the menial task they are punished with.

Despite all this, King does have a very odd code of honor (that he can choose to apply or not as it suits him; he is the king, after all). King considers himself above most opponents, but will take on anyone who challenges his power; however, he particularly enjoys - well, actual challenges. He may or may not execute a downed foe, depending on how they fought. His tendency to let live another day may be his downfall. King is capable of mercy, just not very often - he does not wish to appear soft. As such, people may occasionally find themselves spared the King's wrath, but they should be thankful. Next time, they may not be so lucky.

Trivia/Facts

King's Coup

On May 22, 2213, Wily went missing. As a result of the King Protocol, King and the Omega Masters ("King's Court") awakened, staged a coup, and kicked Bass out of the Masters temporarily. This lasted approximately a month, when Wily was found in an insane asylum and Bass promptly killed King, putting Wily back in control. King was recreated on June 15th, 2213, and all memory of the coup was erased, plus a mental block was put on it.

This means King is unaware of his attempt to take over. While his massive ego means he thinks he should rule when Wily is gone, he has no desire to take Wily's place from him as long as he lives. In fact, King will find ways to reason around obvious evidence of the coup, as well as any evidence of himself as a contigency plan. Such examples include Patriarch (who is obviously an inferior copy, King presumes). King will probably attempt to reason around or, failing that, flat out ignore any attempt to tell him he once took over the Masters by force.

In short - it can't be done. It's basically an extension of his WilyCode. You can try, but you will fail.

The Invasion of Iceland

On March 12, 2220, King (along with an enormous force of Joes, several Robot Masters, Bass, Enker, and Ballade invaded Reykjavik, Iceland. Their goal was seemingly to burn down Reykjavik City Hall and instate a Robot Master stronghold in its place; the operation, while it met with much opposition, was largely successful. Some minor construction has taken place in King's absence.

King's AAR follows:

<Text, from the internals of the E-Ring Machine>

We are pleased. Regrettably, both myself and Bass fell in combat, but Force Commander Burst Man led our armies to victory. Shark Man, Heat Man, Sword Man, Turbo Man, Metal Man, and Ballade all showed spectacular valor in forcing our enemies, including the mighty General and Break Man, into a retreat.

The Dreadskull is currently parked on top of the flaming ruins of what were formerly Reykjavik City Hall. The Joes there are sufficient to defend it in the meantime; their numbers are still decent. Over the next week, construction of the Palace shall begin. We will personally see to it, as soon as our body is reconstituted. (Our Axe was stolen by Break Man, or a copy of it; the energy drain necessitated the e-ring.)

Bravo, Masters. Our foes will remember this day - and not fondly.
