Profile
"There are some things that the people deserve to know...one way or another."
Formerly the star attraction for a smalltime newspaper, it was only after writing a groundbreaking article against the abuse of reploid laborers that he managed to catch the attention of GNN. Since then Hunter Barnett has become one of GNN's most capable reporters, and has built up quite a reputation for getting his information put together regardless of how hard it is to come by. His likable attitude and often eccentric nature may have made him enemies in some, but has also managed to net him a regular spot in the weekly columns as well as the occasional radio or television appearance. Outside of work, Hunter practices judo and parkour, and is said to be a darn good ultimate frisbee player. Rumors around the office give him a bit more sinister air however, as he's been known to show skills that make him bit too tech-savvy to be a simple newsman.
Background
In truth, Hunter Barnett's origin begins with the life of his grandfather, who served as an imbeded reporter in China during the Chinese Revolution. While there, Edgar Barnett wrote extensive articles detailing the conditions there, even when he was occasionally met with opposition from United Nations officials stationed there. Eventually however, his critical stories of UN occupational forces-what he called "what the people deserved to know" cost him his position in China, and forced him to seek a much less interesting career in a small newspaper back in the United States.
With livelier days behind him, Edgar Barnett married and began a family. By the time he finally retired in 2193, his oldest son and his wife had produced Edgar's first grandchild, Hunter. In a sharp contrast to Edgar, Hunter's father had chosen a career in the field of computer science, and had gained a pleasant position in a small company based in the American Midwest. As such, Hunter grew up amidst the circuit boards and software boxes of a technology rich household.
Besides the abundance of computer knowledge that filled Hunter's early life however, there was a great deal of doting he received from his grandfather. In his retirement, Edgar was overjoyed to share his stories from the Chinese Revolution with his easily impressed grandson, and was equally willing to accompany him on whatever adventures his aged body would allow.
By the time Hunter entered college he was absolutely certain as to what he wanted to be, though his parents(who were also paying for his education) had other ideas. Hunter had long sought a career which would allow him to bring the truth to the people like his grandfather had tried, but Hunter's father expected him to follow in his footsteps once he had successfully began his own computer firm. With much determination and arguing, Hunter eventually convinced his parents that he was capable of tackling a double major in Computer Science and Mass Communcations, which would hopefully give him the opportunity to pursue the career he wanted while keeping his family happy.
While in college, Hunter often longed for the more active days of his youth, and engaged in several sports while attending college. The most notable of which was his joining of his university's Judo club, which made it to a state competition while he was a member. He also frequently engaged in parkour/free-running, and built up quite a knack for accessing places he normally shouldn't by scaling walls and practicing landings.
By the time Hunter finished college, he was primed and ready to start up an exciting career with GNN. Unfortunately, such a thing wasn't going to come easy. Instead, he found himself working for a smalltime newspaper and working under his dad on the side. Even in such a small town as the one Hunter lived in at this time, there was some form of news to be found. As it turned out, a relatively large company named Coleridge Industries had established a factory in the town years ago, and after hearing loose rumors about it, Hunter suspected something rather sinister to be behind it.
Though Hunter had his suspicions about the company, there was little he could do to produce solid evidence against it. If he was to break into it outright he'd risk jail time, and though he was rather handy with networking, he wasn't capable of breaking the security of something that caliber, at least without being caught. As fate would have it though, he recalled a friend of his from college who might be able to help him.
Through this acquaintance, Hunter was introduced into the internet circle referred to as "The Greeks". Recognizing that Hunter wished to better his hacking abilities for the sake of his journalism, they accepted him as a student. And so, after two years of instruction, Hunter acquired the skills and knowledge he would need to gain the information he needed to crack the lid on Coleridge.
With his hard-earned knowledge, Hunter Barnett did obtain what information he needed to prepare an article that revealed various dangerous secrets about Coleridge Industries, including reploid labor abuse and improper safety conditions. The investigations that were launched at the factory Hunter had targeted quickly spread to Coleridge's plants all across the country, and within a matter of months the entire company had been struck with a series of lawsuits from the Federal government. Furthermore, Hunter's article brought him the attention of GNN, and he was offered a position within the news service. Finally, he he hoped he would be able to do spread supply the people with the knowledge nobody else would, much like his grandfather.
Trivia/Facts
Hunter's avatar, Prometheus.EXE, was chosen because Hunter saw Prometheus' gift of fire as a parallel to his own attempts to bring truth to the masses.
Hunter feels it his responsibility to share the opinions of anyone who has an impact on the world, and as such is willing to provide a (mostly)unbiased interview to anyone who won't kill him in the process.
Hunter Barnett is named for Hunter S. Thompson, the forefather of gonzo journalism who is known for penning Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Other
Though Hunter is the first OC whom I've had with the Hacking ability, his V-Armor is actually the third of my design. Neither Cerveau nor Albert Wesker had V-Armors when I applied for them, and so I had to devise v-armors for them.
