"In punishment for my contempt of authority, fate has made me an authority myself."

Profile

Thought to be the most brilliant robotic scientist that has ever lived, Dr. Thomas Xavier Light was the first human to create artificial intelligence in a humanoid form, with the help of Dr. Cain and Dr. Wily. The creator of Protoman, Megaman, and Roll, as well as numerous other robots, Dr. Light is the head scientist at Light Labs, as well as the patriarch of the Maverick Hunters. A kind and elderly yet passionate man, Dr. Light has promised to do everything in his power to keep the world safe from Dr. Wily and any other force that threatens it. While he doesn't seem to have any human family, he considers all his creations to be his children and tends to dote on them from time to time.

Background

The exact nature of Thomas Xavier Light's birth is shrouded in mystery. It seems that one day, he simply appeared on the doorstep of a St. Francis Boys Home in St. Paul, Minnesota, wrapped in a set of blankets and a note revealing his name as "Thomas". He was taken into the orphanage without a second thought, and shortly afterward given a middle and last name to go with his rather ambiguous identification: "Xavier" after the patron saint of the orphanage, and "Light" due to the coincidental blackout which occurred on the night he arrived.

Perhaps it was the result of growing up without knowledge of who his parents were, or perhaps it was just his nature, but Thomas Light grew up as quite the prankster and roughhouser. He showed quite a bit of contempt for his caretakers, even though he would consistently due what was told at the last possible moment to avoid punishment. This is not to say that Thomas believed himself above the rules, he simply full of distaste for them. In his mind, he had not received proper treatment from who should have been the authority figures in his life, so he felt that he had no obligation to behave by their rules.

One might have thought that this would have led Thomas to be a delinquent and a failure, however, this was far from the case. Thomas was exceptionally bright despite his bad attitude, and was more than able to keep up with his studies. Eventually, the combination of his attitude and his ability to exceed the standards set in the public school system led him to be placed in an advanced academy sponsored by the state. Here, he would someone who was arguably the single most influential person in his life: Albert W. Wily.

In all honesty, one has to wonder as to why two people as different as Thomas Light and Albert Wily ever managed to become friends. Thomas had always been the class clown despite his good heart, while Albert, despite his upstanding behavior, was full of spite for others. Regardless, their bond was quickly thicker than blood. Thomas was much burlier than the rather scrawny Albert, and would often step in to defend his contemporary when Wily's smart mouth would get him into trouble with some of their classmates. In exchange, Albert would manage to talk Light's teachers into not throwing him out using his pet status. This relationship flourished throughout their time in the Minnesota Academy for the Mentally Gifted, even to the point in which they both received full-scholarships to the University of California in San Angeles.

Shortly after arriving in San Angeles, Thomas and Albert's duo became a trio, gaining the slightly older student Edward S. Cain, who say the two boys originally as freshman to take under his wing, but later found them to be more his equals than his juniors. Before long Light, Wily, and Cain found themselves all taking similar courses in pursuit and of degrees in mechanical engineering and other fields, and so they decided at that point to one day work together on a project which would change the world. This project, they decided, would be the creation of the first fully sentient, artificial life.

Though he seldom would share this truth with anyone these days, Light once loved a woman while he was in college. This woman was the daughter of one of his history professor, Doctor Barrel Caskett, who was the closest thing to a father figure Light had ever had. Matilda Caskett and Thomas Light were truly in love, if there is such a thing in the world anymore, and would have truly fulfilled the vow of "until death to us part" had they ever wed, but as fate would have it, death separated them shortly before such a vow could be made. Tragedy and illness struck Matilda down in her prime, and despite his heartache, almost in spite of it even, Light devoted even more of his life to the completion of his greatest achievement.

As Thomas' college years came to a close he and his friends were well on their way to finishing their project, which was to double as their doctoral thesis. Thomas had worked long and hard to obtain the resources to work on their masterpiece without needing assistance from university grants and the like, as he felt taking such a crutch would go against his ever-present, though slightly mellowed, resistance to authority. Rumors claimed that one point, Light even became known as the "Minnesota Slugger", a competent boxer around the Midwestern circuit. In the end, their work was to come to fruition in time for the first Global Science and Technology Expo of 2199.

Thomas Light's clownish ways were still very present even at this point in his life, as shown by his decision to conceal their creation under the guise of a science-fair volcano until time for the main demonstration. Of course, their trio's superiors from the college were quite appalled by this mockery, but thankfully they reserved judgment until the demonstration. If they had not, the world's first android, SRN-000 Blues, might have not premiered on the global stage which he deserved. But he did, and the world was amazed.

Praise and adoration poured down upon (now)Dr. Thomas X. Light like a waterfall, as he was seen as the progenitor of the Blues Project. Fame and funding was soon given in large quantities by the United States Government, in hopes of revolutionizing the world with the development of similar androids for all sorts difficult tasks. Unfortunately, Dr. Wily did not take the situation quite as well as Dr. Cain did. Wily quickly became spiteful and what he considered to be his mistreatment, and began to plot his revenge on the world using the new set of Robot Masters they had begun work upon.

If was probably at this point that something finally dawned upon Dr. Light; despite his fervent disrespect for authority, all his work had seemingly been to receive the love and attention of a world which had seemingly abandoned him since birth. He had even went as far as to build himself a family in Rock and Roll, and had started taking them on the types of outings he had dreamt of as a young orphan. He would have liked to have thought long and hard about this revelation which had so suddenly thrust itself into his mind, but such time was not a commodity, as he soon found himself the victim of Doctor Wily's nefarious plot for revenge. Many of his "children": Bomb Man, Cut Man, Elec Man, Fire Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, and most shockingly, Blues, had suddenly been snatched from his life leaving him only with Rock, Roll, and their pets. In a shocking turn of events, his dreamscape had quickly become a nightmare.

And things were only going to get worse. Wily was quick to act with his newly gained power, striking out at the city which he blamed for his lack of credit for his work, that which contained the university staff which had favored Light over him: San Angeles. The strike was quick and powerful, leaving no time for the military react. Before long, Wily had seized control and Light was left with only one option: to turn the son he cherished so much into a weapon of war.

In the end, Light's difficult decision led to salvation from Wily's original coup. Light and his son were recognized as selfless heroes, and Light was slowly forced into a position of authority as he found himself helping his son to form the Maverick Hunters as a safeguard against all who would attempt to bring destruction and tyranny to the world. He has faced many things throughout the years, including betrayals, coming apocalypses, redemptions, and even a journey to Mars: all of which he has taken in stride. Having overcame all these tribulations, Doctor Thomas Xavier Light, once an a child with no family and a contemptuous attitude towards the authorities of the world, is now both the progenitor of an entire race of beings, a member of the unofficial family which encompasses all humanity, and one of the world's most prominent scientific and moral authorities.

Trivia/Facts

Dr. Light tries to see the inherent good in all people, be they human, reploid, or otherwise. To this end, he would be willing to forgive even the most sinister of Mavericks if they were to admit their wrongdoing and accept a proper punishment for their crimes.

Dr. Light was quite rebellious in his youth, and so he feels particularly sympathetic to vigilantes: he was once in their position, in a way.

From years of working with Dr. Cossack, Dr. Light is quite capable at piloting Ride Armor. When such heavy weaponry is not needed Dr. Light is sometimes seen in his "Lightsaucer" a small, somewhat combat-capable vehicle he designed as a direct insult to Wily's tendency to rip him off.

Contrary to what some might think, Dr. Light is not capable of understanding every form of technology. In fact, recent Nebula devices have managed to completely stump him.
