Landon was an unaffiliated scientist and bio-mechanist. His name is known throughout the world as one with a great deal of hatred, and confusion, associated with it. DeVry was a man, who until his end, was motivated by his insane desire for immortality.

History

DeVry’s story begins primarily with the chaos of the Chinese Revolution. During the turbulent time, DeVry succeeded in establishing a small demesne for himself in the area close to modern Suzhou. DeVry made himself a near perpetual thorn in the side of the UN stabilization effors, funneling arms to fellow warlords, launching attacks, releasing biological and disease agents into the general populace and numerous other atrocities. It was further discovered that DeVry was apparently using captured UN soldiers and Chinese civilians in order to further his cybernetic and longevity experiments, at a place called Camp Alpha-Twelve. A UN strike team led by Otto Venkmen assaulted the facility. DeVry’s body was found, his head apparently crushed beneath a falling portion of computational equipment. As he was personally responsible for the deaths of over a million Chinese and UN, as well as the horrible disfigurement of countless others, he was forever entitled as ‘The Steel Butcher’ of the Chinese Revolution, and Chinese mothers to this day warn their children that DeVry will come and get them if they don’t eat all of their vegetables. The UN found themselves with an additional cause for concern, DeVry was one of the fathers of modern cybernetics and his research, while gained in a completely unethical fashion was invaluable. Attributing it to a series of lesser or outright fictional scientists, they released the fruits of DeVry’s labors to the free world, and used resulting royalties and funds in order to create a trust for those damaged by his activities.

All seemed well, until DeVry made a re-emergence on the streets of San Angeles in 2213, having apparently cheated his pursuers by placing his desiccated, dried brain within a titanlike cybernetic body. DeVry established ties with Dr. Wily, functioning as Wily’s personal physician. During the period of time he spent with Wily, he focused his mind on the development of robotic assistants, and while his programming abilities were no match for his patron, they were sufficient for him to create the Slasher Jane and Immortamet designs, which he would later expound upon.

DeVry became obsessed with capturing the organic-to-reploid mind transfer data used to transfer the mind of King Dragon into his reploid body. His initial overtures were to Dr. Light, who sensing in DeVry’s obsession that spark of danger, wisely chose not to assist him. DeVry began a silent terror campaign against all of the doctors involved, as well as Repliforce. DeVry’s service with Wily suffered as a result. DeVry succeeded in defending the WilyStar bridge from Maverick assault and was instrumental in the design and construction of the following WilySphere. However, his foul treatment of the Robot masters and their correct assumption that DeVry’s sycophantic ramblings were but a façade being used to mollify Wily while Landon used him to shield himself from his rapidly growing fleet of enemies. Following an attack on Kalinka that was so disturbing that even Wily couldn’t accept it, Landon was forcibly ejected from the Wilysphere with his small contingent of drone forces.

DeVry spent the next few months flitting from one bolt-hole research facility to another, followed by forces in the Mavericks, Maverick Hunters and Repliforce all after his head. DeVry during this period became increasingly unhinged, prone to insane ranting on the broadband network and the development of a new perverse weapon following the unveiling of the first bioroid. DeVry was able to adjust the bioroid’s basic design ethos, using his knowledge of medicine and cybernetics, permitting him to create animal-tissue based bioroids. These creatures had a tendancy for nearly instant-insanity upon activation, and lifespans that could typically be measured merely in hours to a week, but their power output and adaptability made them excellent shock troopers for DeVry’s various combat actions.

DeVry continued his longstanding feud against the Cossack family, seeming to single out Kalinka Cossack over all others. His assaults against her grew increasingly violent, and increasingly purposeless, seemingly actions of pure insane malice with only his desire for the ‘transfer data’ serving as a thin justification. Almost a recluse, he acted more through his terror-bomb drones and eventually through his only sentient creation, the reworked Slasher Jane 16, Zestien.

DeVry’s insane desire for survival captured the attention of Procyon, who decided to grant the scientist his wish, transferring his mind into a nearly perfect reploid replication of a human body called ‘The Eidolon.’ Procyon seemed to indicate that DeVry alone would survive the destruction of the planet due to the looming threat of Nigh. The transit process released spectacular levels of energy which eradicated DeVry’s Malaysia headquarters and caused the world to presume him dead. Eidolon awoke with no knowledge of his previous identity, only startling visions and the sense of a grim dark foreboding. Eidolon was soon discovered by members of the Repliforce, who thought by his odd behavior patterns and sudden appearance that he might have had something to do with the Stardroid threat. Eidolon in essence portrayed what DeVry should have become, free of his guilt, of his own obsessions and free indeed of his own ego. When he expressed a desire to speak to Dr. Cossack, he found himself in the presence of Kalinka, and dimly remembering some deep connection to her, accompanied her to a funfair that evening. In the hall of mirrors, his former personality reasserted itself, but Kalinka, steeled herself and through the symbolic action of smashing various mirrors, destroyed forever the ‘Steel Butcher’ persona, leaving only Dr.Landon DeVry.

Eidolon immediately proceeded to the underwater city of Atlantis where Procyon was gathering incredible energy for a destructive strike that would cripple the planet’s defenses and leave them as but food for the looming threat. Eidolon confronted and distracted Procyon, who fruitlessly attempted to torture DeVry-Eidolon with the knowledge of his past, and his own mortality. DeVry accepted his death almost joyfully, and was compacted into a small cube of metal materials… Procyon had used the remnants of his power in the act, and was defeated.

Trivia

Landon has been responsible for saving the world on more then one occasion, once against Procyon and prior to that against the Eleventh Hour Cancer.

DeVry penned a medical study on the effects of the full-conversion process in the long term. He indicated that after fifty years of full conversion, a cyborg would begin to exhibit a condition he called the ‘Struldbrug Syndrone’ where the victim would begin to gradually lose sensation while retaining actual capacity, feeling blind while being able to see, insensate while still sensing and suffering from a condition similar to phantom limb syndrome. As at the time of his death, DeVry was the oldest full conversion cyborg, it’s unknown if this condition was limited to him or if it is the shared fate of all full conversions.

The disposition of DeVry’s original human body, recaptured by the UN after his eviction from Eurasia, is unknown.

DeVry’s final body, the Eidolon, currently resides in its compacted state at the bottom of Dr. Pavel Cossack’s ashtray, a testament to their feud in life.

Landon typically included self-destruction functions on almost all of his creations, which typically inflicted far more damage then the creations themselves did, causing several people to remark that he missed his calling as a fireworks operator or demolitions expert.

Landon nearly captured an intact variant of the T-Virus, it was rendered inert by an unknown force.

Landon had an arm blown off in every TP, including non-combat ones, he was involved in. This has extended to alternate universe versions of himself.

Nathan Xiang would later make use of DeVry’s bioroid monstrousities.

Landon, due to his background, has the highest body count of any civilian original character.

After his eviction from Eurasia, a number of DeVry’s possessions were sold, including countless numbers of his drones. This led to the introduction of the Jane type drone to a wider market.

One of Landon’s modified mets, an immortamet, was left on mars and became the pet of one of its inhabitants.

Landon once dispatched a fleet of ships to Mars during the Nigh TP in a fruitless escape attempt, one ship was sent off course and lost to deep space, the others were destroyed before landing on Mars, the first terrestrial casualties of the looming threat there.

DeVry still had numerous boltholes with drones awaiting activation at the time of his conversion and death.

Tristian MacAvery was/is Landon’s unofficial voice actor.

A marker upon an empty grave for Landon DeVry is located at the War Monument in Torontreal.
