"You cannot undo what you've done. All you can do is make the best of things after."
Profile
One of the most brilliant biologists and geneticists ever to live, Ciel Mallory is a woman slowly building a new life from the ashes of the old. Seeking to improve humanity to better meet the challenges of the Robot Wars, she developed the human enhancement project, and in doing so helped facilitate the rise of Neo Arcadia. When Repliforce finally defeated the genocidal human supremacist group, Ciel was taken into custody by the United States, and given the chance to make amends for her crimes by working with the European Resistance against the remains of Neo Arcadia, led by Dr. Weil. Working side by side with reploids for the first time in her life, she was forced to reevaluate her prejudices and has slowly learned to accept reploids and other robotic life forms. After joining the war against Dr. Weil and creating a T-Virus vaccine to battle Alexia Ashford, Ciel joined LEGIONS, and uses her talents to make amends for her past sins. A pacifist at heart, the rigors of the last few years have taught her that sometimes one has to fight, though she will never be a warrior.
Background
Born the child of Brigadier General August Mallory and Marie Duvalle, Ciel Renée Mallory was a child prodigy, a genius who was reading by the time she was three. Her father, a veteran of the Chinese Revolution, travelled a lot as a member of the UN Armed Forces, and so Ciel grew up on military bases, impressing visitors to her father's home with her knowledge of military customs and trivia, all taught to her by her doting father.
She took an interest in medicine at a young age, insatiably curious about how things work. At the age of six, she attempted to heal the wounds of a pigeon that crashed into the front window of her house. While the veterinarian who examined the poor bird was amazed at how well Ciel was able to split and bandage its broken bones, the poor bird died of internal bleeding.
Distraught, Ciel tried to run away from home, dodging her parents long enough to get to the large fence that surrounded the base. Being only six, she wasn't strong enough to get over it, and lost her grip, falling nearly fifteen feet and breaking both legs. It was mostly bad fortune that her legs healed poorly, giving Ciel a slight limp that has stayed with her all her life. From that day, she swore to devote herself to medicine.
Ciel only attended school for a short time, quickly outpacing her classmates and feeling out of place among the other children. Her father hired tutors for her, and she soaked up education like a sponge, passing a high school equivalency test at the age of thirteen.
Thus, in the fall of 2200, the thirteen-year old Ciel began undergraduate courses at the University of California San Angeles. She felt instantly overwhelmed by being the youngest student there, and would have broken under the pressure if she hadn't found friends. She fell in with a gaming group in her dorm, playing Exalted in her free time, her official role being the group's 'little sister,' though she doesn't talk much about it otherwise. At the same time, she met William Wiggin and Albert Wesker, fellow classmates, and relied on them for emotional support as she grew up on campus.
In 2205, she tranferred to the Université Louis Pasteur in France to continue her medical education, and by 2212 finished her courses, already a budding star in the fields of genetics and cybernetics. Ciel's research is already extraordinary, though she feels constrained by the rules and regulations the UN sets for medical research.
In 2213, Ciel moves to Mexico, hoping to better the situation of the people there, the city choking with its own pollution and the repeated attacks by Mavericks and Robot Masters. While she does not take part in the riots that ensue over the next few years, she yearns for a better way to do things. It is during this time that she meets Elpizo, a man who is horribly wounded in one of the robot assaults. Nursing him back to health, the initial ideas for Neo Arcadia are born, and Ciel begins researching human enhancement while he begins to recruit among the anti-Maverick resistance in Europe.
While the core of Neo Arcadia is being formed, Ciel rescues a child from an attack by Zero in Shanghai. Unable to heal her using her own medical skills, she instead opts to rebuild her with cybernetics, using genetic therapy to slow her aging so that she won't overgrow the implants and die. Ciel names the shell-shocked child Alouette, not knowing her real name. Elpizo immediately decides to make Alouette the symbol of their coming revolution against Ciel's wishes.
In April of 2217, Elpizo conquers Mexico and begins the Neo Arcadian regime. Ciel creates the first of the enhanced humans: Sage Harpuia, Fairy Leviathan, Templar Fefnir, and Umbra Phantom, and they are unveiled to the world. Over the next few months, it becomes clear to the world that Neo Arcadia's regime is one of genocide and conquest. Ciel herself had the idealistic and unrealistic goals of reploids simply living apart from people, and while she will not vocally support Neo Arcadia's bloody nature, she remains with the group and continues to create enhanced humans.
In March of 2219, Neo Arcadia attacks San Angeles, and to help in the attempt, Ciel creates a cloned and modified Tyrannosaurus rex, using it to hunt down reploids in the city. By this point she has nearly shut herself off from making ethical decisions, and is only shaken when the members of Neo Arcadia continue to grow more and more depraved.
On April 17th, the Neo Arcadian base is destroyed, Ciel trapped in her lab during the collapse. She is saved by the Blade Dancer, an Umbrella biomonster. It breaks her heart when Blade Dancer becomes a Blackguard, revealing her past as Kirin Mathers. This more than anything is the beginning of Ciel's turn against Neo Arcadia, the enraged scientist trying to shoot Dr. Weil for what he's doing to create biomonsters.
On May 23th, Kirin tries to capture Alouette for Ra Moon and kill Ciel. She injects Kirin with a viral toxin that unravels her DNA, and for the first time in her life, kills another living being. This shakes Ciel to the core, and if anything, makes her more overprotective of Alouette and worried about where Neo Arcadia is heading. She begins to grow closer to William Wiggin, the Strider director, and nearly leaves Neo Arcadia with him.
In July she presents a Hypsilophodon foxii, a small plant-eating dinosaur, to the world at the Global Science and Technology Expo, as well as presenting notes about the instability of human clones.
The introduction of the Genocide virus is the final straw, the plague nearly taking Alouette's life. Ciel, too far in to stop Neo Arcadia, instead opts to devote herself to protecting Alouette, beginning to unravel from the stress.
Neo Arcadia is destroyed in January of 2220. Ciel surrenders herself into US custody in an attempt to continue protecting Alouette, but is stymied in her efforts by Grave, who kidnap the child and take her to William Wiggin who does what Ciel never could bring herself to do, healing Alouette and starting her down the road that turns her into Pureri. Ciel spends much of the spring and early summer in US custody, moods shifting between deep depression at Alouette's disappearnce and sullen seclusion. She isn't told what becomes of Alouette... all she knows is that she's unable to see her anymore.
In July, Ciel is given a deal by the US government: work with the Resistance and be allowed to enter the free world once again. More depressed than repentant, Ciel agrees, though she chafes at working alongside so many Reploids. She begins work in Paris, running a free clinic to heal people with unwanted cybernetics forced upon them by Neo Arcadia.
Early in August, Ciel finds out that Daryn Luna is responsible for Alouette's kidnapping and tries to kill him. Cinnamon helps Ciel over her anger and loss, and Ciel is taken aback by Cinnamon's kindness. Over the next few months, she begins to help out more and more with the Resistance, rebuffing the efforts of Neo Arcadia to bring her back. Publically, she claims to want to work alongside robots. Privately, she still has deep doubts, old prejudices hard to overcome.
In late fall, feeling independent for the first time since Neo Arcadia's fall, Ciel founds Charité Technologie, a biotech firm in Berlin. In Charité, she begins work on a new project, a cyber-womb that allows the growth of human babies without human gestation. She intends to present this to the UN to help ameliorate the diminishing human population.
In December, she is given the task of saving the life of Eugene Chaud, putting her amazing skills to the test as she regrows ninety percent of his body, at attack by Blues leaving the STARS leader with barely a skull and spinal column salvageable.
2221. Ragnarok happens. Ciel throws all of her scientific might into trying to cure the T-Virus, a task which takes threen months and help from many of the world's best scientists... as well as some stole Umbrella research. On January 15, Ashford's forces attempt to destroy Berlin and Ciel's research. To defend herself, she clones a prehistoric animal, a Tarchia (a kind of ankylosaur), and turns it into a fighting platform for eight brave Resistance members. These fighters all live to fight another day. The Tarchia, however, enters into single combat with a Yawn, a serpentine biomonster, and is killed in the ruins of Charité. Ciel is badly injured, but the project goes on, Repliforce relocating her to the Fortress V under Gareth's supervision.
On March 7, Ciel presents another dinosaur, a Triceratops horridus, and rides out on it to try and kill Alexia's biomonster. The Triceratops survives the battle with another Yawn. Ciel is thrown from it during the fighting, however, and faces off against Dr. Weil. It is here that her outlook on life is permanently changed.
"I had a vision! A vision of perfection! Of flawlessness! And where did that vision lead? To divisiveness, to genocide, to death! Hundreds, thousands dead because I was blind to what I was doing! In my attempt to improve humanity I created inhuman monsters! But I've learned! I've watched people fight together, watched human and reploid work side by side! I was wrong! We were wrong! Everyone is a person, no matter what they're made of, no matter if their brain is organic or silicate! My work should have been to better the world, not fuel a quest for racial superiority! This was my lesson! I had to lose everything! My home, my future, my daughter! I had to see what I was I had become, and what I should be! And it's not you! It never will be you!" -- Ciel Mallory, March 7, 2221
It is only through the quick efforts of Storm Owl and Cinnamon that Ciel is not killed by the giant sword that impales her, and this is her final action during the war against Alexia. Slow to recover after losing so much blood, she spends her every waking moment on the virus, creating a vaccine to rid the world of T-Willamette once and for all.
After the fall of Weil and Alexia, Ciel rebuilds Charité and joins LEGIONS. She is still hated by many, and yearns to reconcile with Alouette, now Pureri, but has devoted her life to helping the world, not just mankind.
Trivia/Facts
Ciel Mallory still looks like a teenager despite the fact that she is now in her thirties. Most people chalk this up to genetic augmentation she has done to herself, but she refuses to say one way or another. She is generally quiet and withdrawn, and doesn't make friends easily, though she tries to be friendly with everyone.
Obviously she's fascinated with dinosaurs, but has read too many horror stories to harbor any real hope of reintroducing them in great numbers. To some degree, she dotes on her pets as much as she did on the little bird she tried to save when she was six. She's naturally overprotective.
Upon joining Neo Arcadia, Ciel became estranged from her parents, who still live to this day. Upon retiring from the UN Armed Forces in 2203, August Mallory and his wife retired to Australia. They live in Canberra.
Ciel was raised a Roman Catholic, but does not practice currently. She still considers herself a Catholic (so far as census forms are concerned), but is not sure she'd be welcome back in the Church given her field of research.
She doesn't talk about her personal life, and it's not known if she's ever had a real boyfriend. Elpizo and William Wiggin both expressed feelings for Ciel, but she considered Elpizo too much like a father figure to truly open up to him. William, on the other hand, very nearly won her over, her reluctance to leave Neo Arcadia the only thing that kept her from going to him.
Ciel has few bad habits, save from a tendency to medicate herself to eliminate the need for sleep while working on large projects. This tends to make people worry about her, and is largely responsible for her perenially pale complexion.
Ciel enjoys People Chow. While living in Mexico City, it was often the only food readily available, and she grew to appreciate its nutrient-rich nature, teaching herself to like the nasty stuff. She may be the only person on earth who honestly enjoys it.
