Profile
Eugene Chaud is the product of broken homes and broken dreams. His parents divorced at an early age, leaving him in the custody of his mother. While his father became a powerful corporate magnate, Eugene grew up in a blue collar neighborhood in Detroit in the shadow of decaying auto factories. He found his male role models on the streets; gangsters and thugs, men who ruled their neighborhoods by force and the threat of force. However, Eugene had no desire to be a criminal. All he ever wanted was a better life for himself and his family, yet he had to play the game by their rules. Eugene became a hardened man, doling out street justice in his neighborhood while working in one of the last human-run union steel mills in the state. Chaud's leadership ability and toughness eventually gained the attention of military recruiters, and he left the mill to become one of the UN's power armor commanders. His tactical acumen eventually allowed him permission to customize (read: pimp) his suit. No one was particularly surprised to see that it looked like Blues. Various leadership turnovers and political events saw Eugene attached to STARS, which puts him in uncomfortably close company with his estranged father. Eugene's leadership style is as hard and unforgiving as he is. He drives his people hard and himself harder, having no tolerance for laziness or incompetence. Yet, behind the angry exterior is a lonely man who would like nothing more to finally get out of the game and live like everyone else.
Background
Born to Shuseki Ijuin and Irene Chaud in the bustling city of Detroit, Eugene's early life was filled with disruptive strife, his parents constantly fighting with one another (and not merely minor arguments, either, but rather those verbal fights which ultimately leave both parties wounded and scarred and cause young children to cower in their rooms), until, when he was six years of age, they divorced in an extremely explosive arrangement.
While the loss of his father at such a formative age hit the young Eugene hard, it also paved the way for a more stable life, and his mother, no longer continually emotionally burdened with the presence of her ex-husband, seemed to become more peaceful and loving, devoting whatever time she could to her son, intently instilling within him very powerful moral values, yet very gentle and soft in her guiding and raising of him. Granted, life was a far cry from cushioned, and his mother had to spend long hours away from home working to support the two of them--often two and three jobs simultaneously--but in the eyes of the young boy, life was alright.
As he moved into his early teen years, however, gaining the additional observation that comes with age, Eugene began to start noticing things he had never truly noticed before: the tiredness that always seemed to be in his mother's eyes and face, the crime that was prevalent within the neighborhood...the strange men that would appear when work became scarce and eviction was threatened or there wasn't any food in the house.
Observations and connections between events that previously seemed unrelated led to more of the same, and, gradually--yet with an increasing rate each day--Eugene began losing the innocence and delusions of his youth, forced to grow up more rapidly than should normally be expected by the knowledge he held, for the more he understood about everything his mother went through (and had gone through for years) for his sake, the more he began to step up and fill in the vacuum created by his father's absence, taking on the mantle of man of the family. Every day after school, he would search out odd jobs for hours at a time, accepting whatever was offered him, no matter how strenuous or tiring, doing everything within his power to relieve the incredible burden upon his mother. It was extremely hard for him at his young age--for robots had already replaced humans in an immensely large portion of physical labor jobs, and only those willing to sacrifice greatly could really maintain any type of steady income in this manner--but, despite this fact, he never took the easy way out, consistently turning away the criminal errands and such offered him (not because he necessarily held the law itself in high regards--for, indeed, it wasn't uncommon for him to take on jobs that were technically illegal for him to preform, due to government regulation of youth labor--but because there was a burning passion within him that he would never, /never/, inflict harm upon someone else for the betterment of himself and his family, no matter what he had to do to maintain both this integrity and his obligation to his mother).
Time continued to pass in this manner, and as Eugene moved into his middle teens, his realm of observation once again gradually began to increase, expanding to some of the people within his neighborhood, and once again, his actions began to reflect that increased knowledge. Suddenly, Chaud wasn't just the young man that scoured the streets for work, but also the young man that would give of what little spare time and energy that he already had to assist those who were even worse off than he and his mother, usually in the case of single mothers with several children and elderly people. Additionally, combining the physical capabilities which he had been developing from long hours of strenuous labor with an intense inner determination and courage, Eugene also began to stand up to some of the local gangsters, those who would seek to prey upon the week and helpless and take what little they already had away. Yes, there were indeed times where he would stagger home, bruised and bloody, barely able to see for the swelling in his eyes, after such confrontations, but he never backed down, never ceased to stand up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves.
Rapidly, Chaud began to become seen as a leader within his local community, a living model of integrity and perseverance in the face of adversity that encouraged and uplifted people who had suffered from depressive conditions for years, sometimes generations. He was a hard man (for none could think of him as a boy, certainly), yes, a man of the streets, but he was a man of justice and active compassion, standing up for those who couldn't stand up for themselves, and pressuring those who /could/ stand, but didn't, to begin to do so. Gradually, as months passed, then years (during which Eugene managed to land a steady job with one of the last human-run steel plants in the state), the neighborhood began to see a change: no longer did people always look out solely for number one, and those immediately connected to them, but--speaking for the majority--they also began to help one another, as well; no longer did people cower in the face of organized crime and ruthless thugs, but they began to stand up, collectively, showing a supported face to those who would seek to exploit the individual; those of the younger generations who had been pulled in by the lure of crime began to follow Chaud's example, procuring honest, even if strenuous, work, and using the strength and energy of youth to assist those who no longer had those benefits. (As a final, yet very important note before we move on, Eugene never, /never/, neglected his primary obligation--the one to his mother--during this time, and, due to his long hours at the steel mill, he did indeed manage to significantly reduce the burden upon his mother, and he even utilized his influence at one point along the way to land her a secretary's job, fully and finally eliminating the physical stress from her life that her body was never really able to handle).
Of course, such drastic changes as had occurred in what had once been gang country filled with trodden-down residents for decades, perhaps even a couple of centuries, began to garner attention from various people in authority, and, three years ago, at the age of twenty-one, Chaud was approached by UN military recruiters and offered a position as one of their power armor operators. Seeing not only an opportunity to further better himself and the condition of his mother, but also to fight for justice and those who lack the ability to stand up for themselves against the ruthless elements that would seek to take advantage of them on a global scale, he accepted without question--however making a point of settling affairs at home (particularly, passing on the unofficial mantle that he held as the leader to another, someone he trusted to keep things going as they had for the last several years), before moving into a larger scene.
Since then, Eugene Chaud has fought both through the ranks and against tyranny with the same intense, hard (harsh, even, some would same) determination that has characterized him since the later years of his youth. Various political events have seen him making a couple of separate moves as the winds have dictated, landing him finally in STARS, but no matter who he's worked with or under, his integrity and passion for standing up for the weak has remained steadfast...even growing with the years.
Personality
(Note: this is merely a rough preliminary, and is subject to change as I further flesh out Chaud's character).
Due partly to natural development, but primarily to the circumstances surrounding his years of maturation, there are two distinct "layers" to Eugene Chaud's personality: the external, and the internal, which seem to be radically different, yet somehow, coherently harmonious, the external an unconventional, yet effective, expression of the internal.
Externally, Chaud is a very hard man, seemingly without even a hint of compassion or mercy, possessive of no tolerance for laziness or ineptitude, pushing both himself and those under his command to great levels for unknown reasons (some will indeed know why, but the majority are left to wonder, his personality seemingly contradictory with the possibility of a desire to better those whose lives are threatened by those who would take advantage of them). He is an inscrutable man that does not allow people to get close to him, angry and alone, a surface-level professionalism and an intense determination to bring down the evil of the world the only thing that most people ever see.
Internally, Chaud truly is driven by a desire to stand up for those who cannot do so for themselves, a subconscious empathy reaching out for those who must live their lives in conditions even worse than that which he experienced growing up. This generally surfaces in targeting those world players that wreak the most havoc upon the innocent in a way that would inflict long-term harm upon them and their goals, but he's equally no stranger to reactionary battles, taking the enemy on as they appear to minimize damage and casualties inflicted, for, despite appearances, he does indeed have a very great compassion for those unfortunates that become involved in these scenarios. Now, it /is/ true that he has no mercy for those who would harm others for their own selfish gains, but, equally, he will do what he can to help those who are genuinely victims of circumstances if they honestly wish to change their ways.
