Profile
One of the last of the Black Dragon Striders to train under Master Yosho Roshi, Belenus was a world class archer hailing from Ireland. With the rampant corruption suffered under the rule of the United Nations, his campaign of vigilantism using such skill reliant methods as a bow and arrow earmarked him for training by the Black Dragon Striders. His personal code of conduct, coupled with a devout adherence to Irish Catholocism, granted him the necessary discipline to become a highly effective assassin while maintaining a strict moral stance upon what targets he would accept. Best known for a royal screwup during an infiltration that caused the capture of Hunters Jazz and Sonata. This did not leave him well liked by many parties, coupled with his crass and obnoxious behavior on occasion. Becoming an independent agent after the Black Dragons dissolved entirely, Belenus worked with the European Resistance until becoming embroiled in the Yakuza/Triad War. The fallen Strider Grisha was dispatched to deal with him, and after several clashes, the two fought in Wiggin's Anatartic base as Linnea Blossom and Tetsuo Sakizaki battled the Master. Seeing the aspiring grandmaster was weak to fire, he threw his cipher to Linnea, to aid her attacks on Wiggin. However, the maneuver left him open to be mortally wounded by Grisha, whom he landed a killing blow upon before succumbing to his injury.
Background
Born in 2193 to Catherine and Silas Molony, Belenus was named after his grandfather, Silas' father, who was in turn named for a Gaelic sun deity. Raised in a small town not far from Dublin with his sister Felicia, two years his elder. At an early age he showed exceptional hand-eye-coordination, though his light build dashed hopes at it's use for more contemporary sports. However, his mother had in her girlhood practiced archery through college, and enjoyed the sport still into her years raising a family. Long had her family made use of older traditions, including Gaelic folklore and language being taught to her children, so that they may teach it to theirs, and so on. Of course, emphasis stayed with the stories of faeries and druidism being myths-a sort of cultural oral history, as the other strong tradition she enforced upon the family being observance of Irish Catholocism. Each and every Sunday, Catherine assured Belenus and his sister attended mass. Their father Silas was pious, but not exceptionally so, and sometimes missed a service or two (much to Catherine's scolding). In addition, it was Catherine who introduced Belenus, as well as his sister, to archery. Having practiced the sport in her girlhood up through college, she was delighted to find Belenus' dexterity made him an excellent shot. He was quickly groomed for competition, Catherine insisting to the boy that "God had given him a gift, and by hell or high water, he was going to make use of it."
Despite the usual exasperation of child to parent, Belenus relished in the attention from his mother, growing exceptionally close to her as she coached him. By age 10, he was the best in his region; by 14, his entire age division. At 18, he competed in the 2210 World Championships in Germany, placing 8th. Unfortunatly, this is where he and his mother parted ways: she wanted for him to use athletic scholarships to gain a university degree, whereas he wanted to go professional within the sport immediatly, foregoing secondary schooling. So, he left home for England to train as part of the United Kingdom team, leaving his family and mother behind. Despite feeling Catherine had only been holding him back by her fussing and traditions, mass was still a regular part of his weekly routine-it gave him an inner peace, something to focus upon. Even in competition, he never removed his prayer beads and cross.
While he had predicted that one day he and his mother would reconcile, he could not possibly predict the drawn out conflict of the Robot Wars. With Android and then Reploid production en mass, many athletic achievements of humans were cast aside, replaced in a matter of years with the Battle and Chase games. Disenchanted with the sport, Belenus returned home to Ireland, though staying only in Dublin. Without a college education, finding a career was difficult, but he refused to return to his parents admitting they had been right in wanting him to seek higher education. It was a decision he would regret. With Sigma's global reign of terror, the United Nations governance of the European soon began to crumble into the corruption and greed that Black Shield perpetuated. The proximity of the Repliforce HQ in London only worsened things. In October of 2214, Catherine fell victim to a resulting riot after a Maverick attack, killed by marauding thugs only seeking to take her purse at knifepoint in the chaos. Finally returning to his family in mourning, and enraged at both his failure to reconcile before it was too late and that the culprits, identified by locals by name, had yet to be apprehended, Belenus went to the local authorities demanding justice. The turmoil however, left them unable to spare any effort in the case beyond basic paperwork. This simply was not enough for Belenus-the woman who had raised him, coached him, given birth to him, was dead. And her killers walked free.
The decision to kill them himself came to Belenus, oddly enough, as he sat in mass at the local cathedral. The logic seemed simple-the Lord asked his people to be shepherds and agents of His will. In turn, God condemned murder and other such crimes. Thusly, destroying those who would prey on others was perfectly within reason. While admittedly a bit of zealoud thought, Belenus found it justification enough to systematicly locate and kill each of the three assailants, using his professional competition bow and arrows. The oddity of murder by arrows in the 23rd century was enough to confound police forces enough to evade immediate suspect. While justice was done, Belenus began to expand the thought he'd had before-corruption and evil was rampant in modern society. Those who suspected he had been involved in the deaths of his mother's murderers made mention of other offenders-organized crime agents, rapists, and the like. The same line of teachings from his faith also stated that apathy and inaction in the face of evil was worse than the evil iteslf. If he could do justice where the authorities could not, why shouldn't he right other such wrongs elsewhere?
In the next few months, Belenus felled over a dozen small time crooks, two organized crime bosses, five major drug dealers, and in his culminating achievement-which began a manhunt for him accross Europe-the killing of Shamus McManus, a parliamentary representative who was extorting his constituents for votes and campaign contributions, among other numerous sins. Each and every one, in a nod towards both his mother's folklore teachings and the redeemability of even the blackest of souls, were left with a pair of dollar coins in their eyes. In the underworld, this was to pay the ferryman at the River Styx for passage to the afterlife. At this point, Belenus' hunt for those too evil to be allowed to continue on in this world had become his profession. It did not pay well, for the targets were of his own choosing, and it forced him to go underground, away from his sister and widower father. It was in these circles that the Black Dragon Striders took notice of the young man. His talents had only grown in their use to kill. He was driven with purpose, and noted for his exceptional ethics despite his occupation. Thusly was the young man from Ireland chosen to for candidacy as a Strider.
Trained for years under Master Yoshi up until his unfortunate death at which point the remaining aspects were undertaken by senior Striders, Belenus' skills in archery were pushed to their absolute human limits and beyond. He was instructed in the study of dozens of styles, ranging from Asian Zen Archery, to the rapid fire riding style of Western American Natives. By his graduation, Belenus could pick off a small bird at a distance nearing 1/2 of a mile without aid of a scope or any other magnifying device. Of course, like all striders, he was also thoroughly versed in hand to hand and melee combat. His piety and discipline were instrumental to his success, finding strength in his faith when none remained within his body. As joke to his name, a Gaelic sun god, Belenus was instructed in Sol Style sword fighting, utilizing a red hot cipher in a number of maneuvers accentuating wide slashing arcs.Hand-to-hand training took his slight frame and taught him to use it to his advantage, twisting and bending it to evade any number of attacks at a high speed, almost superhuman in reflex; though they were unable to teach him ample means of dealing with crushing gravitational attacks, something his body simply was unable to handle due to it's wiry build. Stealth and infiltration, the bypassing of security systems, finding means of entry, moving in complete silence within the shadows, and the silent killing of guards and other obstacles were key to Molony's training as they were any Strider-if he was to be an effective assassin, he would need to get to his targets quickly and unnoticed, and leave in the same manner.
When Sheena unified the Striders, only for their eventual factioning once more, Belenus went with Yosho Roshi-he saw the genetic manipulation the White Dragons upheld to be monstrous, and unnatural; fully against his faith to be accessory to those who wished to 'play god'. He continued under Yosho until the man's unfortunate death over a year ago, at which point the final details were undertaken by senior Black Dragons. Upon completing his training, Belenus was granted full title as a Strider. He would be an assassin, targeting those who had evaded conventional justice, enforcing it in the name of the innocent upon whom they had preyed upon. He was given Veritas, a bow that could be dissassembeled into two halves for quick storage, and re-assemebeled with small scope and strung within less than a minute (the rapid bowstringing had also been a part of his training excercises). It's compliment was an assortment of arrows, from standard lightweight alloy metal shafts and points capable of piercing stone and some armor, to explosives, electrical charges, flame heads, nets, grappling hooks, and other such items. The Cipher crafter for him, a short sword with inlaid wiring and circuitry capable of heating it's blade to white hot within moments, was dubbed the Aequitas Cipher. A bow of truth, and a blade of justice: Belenus was to bring balance to the world through these tools.
The year 2219, saw the numbers of his fellow Black Dragon Strider, dwindling before he has even fully begun. The loss of Isamu and Linnea Blossom to the forces of Ra Moon was a devastating blow to the organization, and Belenus was finally been moved to fully active duty in order to make up for the loss. While his superiors worry his short period of training may be his undoing, Belenus was ready to meet the challenge with vigor; he does, after all, have to make Catherine proud.
The recent years were the most difficult for Belenus. The re-appearance of Grandmaster Meio shortly after the reunification of the White and Black Dragon Striders created tension within the organization as opposing viewpoints came to clash. The fall of the Grandmaster was a great accomplishment in Belenus' mind, for he was a terrible evil. But then, there was a resounding feeling of 'what now?'. Many secrets of Meio's works behind the scenes for decades came to the surface, among them the Sword of Dagobert. But, with many of the trainees taken away with William Wiggin when he seperated to reform the Red Dragon Striders left the remaining Strider ranks gutted, without hope to continue. A botched infiltration attempt that resulted in the capture of Jazz and Sonata on Belenus' part left the man questioning confidence in his own abilities.
With the death of Zach Glen and Grisha's spiral into a monstrosity under Wiggin's control, the Black Dragon Striders were no more. Belenus worked with Hiryu and the European Resistance to break the continent from Dr. Weil's growing influence for some time. While he attempted for a time to hunt the mysterious Dragonfly, Belenus was unable to successfully defeat the robot at any time in combat, and continued to other projects. With the outbreak of war between the Yakuza and Crimson Serpent Triad, Molony took the chance to pick off many of the Triad's officers. Being a front for Wiggin's Red Dragons, the self appointed Master was not pleased with this, and dispatched Grisha to deal with the assassin.
After several clashes accross China with his ex-comrade, Belenus took the fight to Wiggin. Stealing a teleporter code from a Red Dragon Trainee on assignment, he infiltrated Wiggin's antartic base of operations. Unknown to him, Linnea Blossom and Tetsuo Sakizaki had also arrived to destroy William Wiggin once and for all. A bitter battle ensued, Belenus taking on Grisha while the other two Striders fought Wiggin.
Realizing during the struggle that the Striders achieved so much more together than apart, and it was mistrust of each other that had led to so many splinterings, Belenus chose to break the cycle. Instead of finishing Grisha when he had the chance, Belenus chose instead to throw his cipher to Linnea-giving her another edge to make the final push to kill Wiggin. Molony was summarily disemboweled, doomed to bleed to death, but not before shoving an ice arrow into Grisha's chest-freezing the blood substitute that now filled the Fallen Dragon's veins, and killing him.
Belenus died shortly after, unsavable between blood loss and the explosion of Tetsuo's Chaos Cipher.
