Character Data

"Making the world a better place is a noble cause. I just hope that's what I'm doing."

Profile

Alloy is an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances. Starting as a curious, child-like companion to his creator, he soon discovered a gift for electronics and computer hacking, spending as much time online as he did in the real world. Eventually, Alloy was drawn into the war by his compassion for others. Putting his Operator-like talents to good use independantly, he was startled when the Hunters approached him but eagerly accepted the invitation, gradually rising to become a respected senior member of their support crew. Once content to merely sit in the navigator's chair and support the fighters on the front line, Alloy's conscience has pricked him again, pushing the humble reploid to take a more active role in the fight for everlasting peace. While sometimes this decision has brought him grief, at other times he has found unexpected success and joy, especially evident in his blossoming relationship with Nana. Easy-going and amiable, Alloy tries to retain a simple perspective despite the things he finds himself forced to do, occasionally admitting to a fear that he will lose sight of what compelled him to stand up and make a difference in the first place.

Background

In the early days of the reploid race's existence, many scientists were tempted by the allure of creating a new life with their own hands, heedless of the ethical issues inherent in such acts. Dr. Matthew Stuart, an AI specialist and neural net developer for an Australian reploid manufacturing firm, was one such scientist. He started building the then-unnamed Alloy at home in 2206, after the CRF's rebellion was put down. Unfortunately, the sudden death of his wife during this period sent Matthew into severe depression. Alcohol featured strongly, and Alloy languished, unfinished, for months before Matthew came across him one lonely night and toyed with some parts. What started as an idle distraction became an obsession, a focus that gave him some sort of meaningful purpose again.

Alloy became the son Matthew and his wife never had. Programmed with a mental age of seven and activated on March 12th, 2207, his intense curiosity and wonder demanded Matthew's attention to help Alloy through his formative period. Forced to live up to these responsibilities, Matthew came to better understand artificial life and its similarities to human life as Alloy quickly matured. The reploid found a natural affinity with technology, especially programming, and was soon a regular presence on several online sites, mailing lists and chatrooms. In 2210, Kurt Bannister's assassination acted as a catalyst, shocking Alloy into examining the conflict with harder scrutiny than he'd bothered to prior. Realising he could do something to help, Alloy sat down and had a long talk with his father. In the end, he left home with some zenny and enough mechanical knowledge to keep himself in good nick, so long as he was careful.

Alloy spent the next few years as an independant SIGINT operative, causing minor headaches for both Masters and Mavericks by intercepting their communications and picking up leads on their movements or immediate plans. A few tipoffs to the Hunters caught their interest, culminating in an invitation after he got involved in one of the frequent raids on Neo-Tokyo's infrastructure, spontaneously acting as the Hunter team's Operator when heavy jamming cut them off from Light Labs.

And since then life has gotten even more interesting.

Cyberspace

The internet is where Alloy discovered his calling and honed raw talent into formidable skill, making a name for himself as one of the hacker elite in the online world. He has appeared in a number of forms but is best known as Talos even by non-hackers, after being propelled into the spotlight during the N1 Grand Prix. Paradoxically, this has made him intensely private, contrasting with his internet girlfriend who relishes the prospect of pwning random noobs. Famous both for his association with Magnificent Seven and in his own right, Talos is known as an honest and principled hacker.

Aside from managing the Hunter network with his two colleagues and various minions, Alloy engages in the time-honoured profession of Virus Busting, following a philosophy of working pro bono publico (for the public good) - he fights major outbreaks and helps with particularly problematic system infestations. Alloy also creates cyberspace simulations as a hobby in his increasingly scarce free time. Occasionally he accepts commissions, although his services in this area command a premium these days.

Avatars

At: Alloy's first notable avatar was At, an amorphous humanoid visually composed of flowing symbols, letters and numbers. Once a legacy project, he now keeps this avatar actively updated.

Talos: Designed and coded to go face to face with the worst that can be found online, Talos is based on the mythical figure of the same name. He denies being an actual member of the Greeks, but has a guest account at their Forum.

Alloy.EXE: A general-purpose 'Alloy as a BN NetNavi' skin that he generally uses with At for blending in, rather than as an avatar in its own right.
